IPL Season 6:Ranatunga calls Lankan players to boycott IPL6

World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has urged Sri Lankan players to boycott the Indian Premier League (IPL) after they were barred from participating in Chennai.
Bowing to intense political pressure, the IPL Governing Council, withdrew top Sri Lankan players from the Chennai matches of the tournament which begins on April 3 after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said they were unwelcome in view of the prevailing anti-Sinhalese sentiments in the state.
“These are world class players and if the IPL have decided against them playing in one part of the country and degraded the cricketers, I think they should not play anywhere else. They should keep their dignity and stay at home. If they are not welcome in one part of the country why play in other parts,” he was quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

Ranatunga slammed the decision of the Sri Lanka Cricket and government to allow players to participate in the IPL as an endorsement of human rights abuse allegations against Sri Lanka.
"What most people seem to ignore is that both Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi are wanting to stop Sri Lankans playing in Tamil Nadu because they accuse Sri Lanka of human rights violations. So playing in other (Indian) states while skipping Tamil Nadu is an endorsement of human rights allegations against our country," Ranatunga told PTI.
"Players must be made aware of this as the world will say that Sri Lankan IPL players have unwittingly endorsed the human rights violation charges," said Ranatunga, who is an opposition member of parliament.
Ranatunga charged both the Tamil Nadu leaders of playing politics with sport.
"They were never concerned about the welfare of north and east (Sri Lankan) Tamils other than at times of elections in Tamil Nadu," he said caustically.
Ranatunga's comments came as the Sri Lankan government on Wednesday allowed the 13 players to appear for IPL franchises subject to skipping matches in Chennai.
Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage while asking for a further guarantee on the security of Sri Lankan players from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said othe players would only be permitted to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) consequent to a written declaration from them, according to Daily Mirror.

The minister said players who wished to participate in the IPL would have to submit a written declaration to the Sports Ministry stating they were agreeable to play under the prevailing conditions.

He also said the BCCI would have to give an assurance of the players’ security.

“The BCCI has to first give us a guarantee that they would provide security to our players. The Indian Board has informed us that they would provide the necessary security to the players at all venues except Chennai but we are awaiting a further guarantee,” he said.

The decisions were taken consequent to a meeting held with the participation of the Sports Minister, Ministry Secretary, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President, Secretary and the CEO.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Cricket has issued the following statement:

"Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that discussions were held with the Minister of Sports this morning regarding the release of the Sri Lanka players for the IPL 2013.

Based on a note sent by the Minister of External Affairs regarding the safety of players and reports appearing in the electronic and print media, it was decided that the No Objection Certificates (NOC) issued to the players be restricted to exclude their appearance at any venue in the state of Tamilnadu and also to obtain the Players’ personal opinion on their willingness to participate in the event.

At the initial stages, SLC liaised with the BCCI and obtained Safety Guarantees for their participation and conveyed their assurances to each individual player. If and when the players express their intention to play in the IPL 2013, they would be permitted to proceed with the restriction indicated on playing in the State of Tamil Nadu."
Ranatunga said that the IPL Governing Council should have taken all the matches away from Chennai.
"I think what IPL should have done was pulled out all the matches from South India if they are so keen on Sri Lankan players participation. But it's all political gimmick," he said.
Ranatunga reiterated that Lankan cricketers should have been treated with more respect.
“They could have played in all other venues instead of Chennai and that would have been the best decision that would have served all stakeholders. This should have been the decision that was taken instead of giving into threats. A decision such as this would have shown respect to our cricketers instead of the demeaning manner in which they have been treated,” he added.
“I don’t believe that sports and politics should ever get involved. This sets a bad precedent for the sport because tomorrow you will have some other part shouting against another country. They (IPL) have given into the gimmicks of Tamil Nadu politicians, and will have to watch for the repercussions,” he warned.

New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder in coma after brawl

New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder is in hospital with serious head injuries after being involved in a fight in Christchurch.
A Christchurch Hospital spokesperson told local media that Ryder was in intensive care with a fractured skull. Calls to the hospital were not immediately returned.
New Zealand Police said they were investigating an incident at a bar in Merivale, a suburb of Christchurch, early on Thursday and that Ryder had been involved.
Ryder, 28, had left the bar with a group of people when he became involved in the incident, police said in a statement.
Police were called at 12:44 a.m. local time (1144 GMT) and Ryder was rushed to hospital by ambulance.
Jesse Ryder
"We are piecing together what took place and speaking to witnesses to understand how this incident unfolded," Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Archer said in the statement.
"I would ask anyone who witnessed the incident or were part of the group involved with Mr Ryder to contact police."
Ryder was in Christchurch playing for Wellington against Canterbury in the semi-final of New Zealand's domestic one-day competition on Wednesday.
An eye witness told New Zealand's Fairfax Media that the cricketer had been punched and kicked by at least four men.
"We are all shocked by what has occurred and extremely concerned for Jesse," New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said in a statement. "New Zealand Cricket's thoughts are with him and his family."
Ryder's manager Aaron Klee, Cricket Wellington chief executive Peter Clinton and New Zealand Cricket Players' Association head Heath Mills were all travelling to Christchurch, NZC said.
Radio New Zealand reported on its website (www.radionz.co.nz) that Ryder was in a coma and had a collapsed lung, without naming sources.
The bar's manager said Ryder had been at the venue with his Wellington team mates, the report added.
Wellington Cricket CEO Peter Clinton declined to comment on the incident or Ryder's condition when contacted by phone by Reuters, but said police and cricket officials would hold a media conference later on Thursday.
Klee did not immediately return calls, but he wrote on his Twitter page: "thanks for the calls and msgs of support for Jesse. Just heading to Chch to see him".

Olympic boxers to fight without head guards

Olympic boxers will fight without head guards in a pro-style scoring system starting this year after several significant rule changes by the sport's international governing body.
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) unveiled several rule amendments this week, but the two biggest changes will move the amateur sport much closer to the professional version. The rejection of headgear and the introduction of 10-point scoring could make the sport once known as amateur boxing more appealing to young boxers seeking professional careers.
Male boxers at the world championships in October and the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 won't wear the protective head guards adopted before the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Although the move might seem counterintuitive in preventing brain injuries, the chairman of AIBA's medical commission, Charles Butler, cites numerous medical studies that suggest fighting without head guards will decrease concussions.

"There's no evidence protective gear shows a reduction in incidence of concussion," Butler said. "In 1982, when the American Medical Association moved to ban boxing, everybody panicked and put headgear on the boxers, but nobody ever looked to see what the headgear did."
AIBA's executive committee unanimously voted to add head guards to amateur competition in April 1984, and they stayed in place through eight straight Olympics.
But the headgear has long been criticized for diffusing the impact of a blow and allowing fighters to continue sustaining more head shots for a longer stretch of time. The gear also offers no protection to the chin, where many knockout blows land in boxing, while the bulky sides of the device impede fighters' peripheral vision, preventing them from seeing every head blow.
The head guard ban will only affect male boxers at the top levels of AIBA competition, meaning women's boxers and younger fighters will still wear the gear.
The amateur sport also is moving to a pro-style, 10-point scoring system, discarding the latest version of the much-criticized computer punch-count systems implemented after the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Each fight will be scored by five ringside judges with the traditional 10-9 or 10-8 rounds familiar to fans of professional boxing.
The sport moved to a punch-counting system after the infamously bizarre results in Seoul, including Roy Jones Jr.'s inexplicable loss. But the computer system has been highly subjective and arcane, often turning the sport into a sparring session that emphasizes punch volume over technique and ring generalship. North American boxers have been particularly critical of the computerized scoring, with many top U.S. and Mexican prospects declining even to participate in amateur boxing.
The traditional scoring system also should indirectly improve fighters' safety, according to Butler. Since body shots and combinations notoriously scored few points in the computerized punch-count system, fighters have long placed a premium on a high volume of head shots, since an opponent's neck snapping back is the surest way to make sure a punch is seen and counted.
"Boxing isn't bean-counting," Butler said. "The thing that makes (the computer system) dangerous is if you're a boxer, you know you're not going to get a point for a body shot, so what are you going to do except punch the head? There were no points given for combinations. You might get one point. If a kid was a counterpuncher, you'd lose."
AIBA has been moving its sport to a professional model for the past several years under the direction of President Wu Ching-Kuo, even opening two professional boxing ventures: the team-based World Series of Boxing and the individual APB Boxing, slated to debut this fall. AIBA even dropped the word "amateur" from its name and competitions to emphasize its desire to control boxing at every level.
"It is AIBA's duty to bring the sport of boxing to the pinnacle of the Olympic Movement, and I am convinced that these changes will critically contribute to the development of our beloved sport," Wu said. "Decisions have not been made lightly, and we will now put a lot of efforts in educating our national member federations, our officials, boxers and coaches, as well as boxing fans around the world."
