Champions League Football: Champions League prize money to rise in 2015-18

Champions League clubs' share of billion-dollar annual prize money is set to rise through 2018 as their need for income increases in the 'Financial Fair Play' era.

The agency marketing Champions League rights on behalf of UEFA said on Monday that clubs will be "happy" with their increase when the next deals kick in.

Switzerland-based TEAM Marketing is currently selling broadcast and sponsorship deals for the 2015-18 seasons, which follow existing three-year deals worth 1.34 billion euros ($1.85 billion) annually.

"It is a fantastic time '15 to '18, we will generate growth and we will see happy clubs with the results," TEAM director Martin Wagner said in an interview. "The clubs are expecting growth and we will manage that."

The 32 clubs playing in this season's Champions League will share at least 900 million euros ($1.24 billion) in UEFA prize money.

Last season, Juventus was the biggest earner getting 65.3 million euros (then $86.3 million) from UEFA despite being eliminated in the quarter-final. Each club is paid an entry fee for reaching the group stage, plus results bonuses through the competition and a share of their national broadcasting deal.

Champions League income is key for elite clubs trying to meet UEFA's 'Financial Fair Play' rules which regulate spending and require clubs to approach break-even on their football income. In the most serious cases, clubs face being barred from the Champions League.

Missing out is increasingly risky - for broadcasters and clubs.

"The unique model of the Champions League is it's the mass (audience), you get the numbers," Wagner said on the sidelines of the International Football Arena conference.

Wagner told delegates at FIFA headquarters that a global average audience of at least 170 million watched Bayern Munich beat German rival Borussia Dortmund in the final last May - the biggest rating for a sports event in 2013.

"Everybody needs premium content," Wagner said, adding that the Champions League is "unique to have for sponsors who need to connect with consumers."

Wagner predicted "enormous growth" potential in the China, India and the United States, where Fox holds the 2012-15 rights. Some European markets - including Britain - would have strong competition between pay-TV broadcasters.

"What you get now, you have in the future," Wagner said of broadcasters' sports-led business model. "Bidders like Sky, they need to do the job now because then they have the so-called inertia benefit, meaning people are then reluctant to change to other systems."

The 2015-18 deals will likely be the last when a winning bid gets the broadcast rights across all digital platforms.

"The bidders know that something is coming," Wagner said, predicting big change driven by social media and young fans. "All the companies who try to sell devices will be strong bidders in future."

Change should also be lucrative for UEFA and clubs, with screen technologies such as virtual advertising set to "revolutionize everything," Wagner said.

"You can put your message regionally, you can target your groups better, so this will generate more income," he said.

Boxer Amir Khan and Faryal Makhdoom expecting their first child

While Amir Khan waits patiently to battle it out with Floyd Mayweather in the richest bout ever on May 3, 2014, the British boxer impatiently announces the wife Faryal's pregnancy.
Amir Khan and his wife Faryal are set to become parents for the first time.

The former two-time world champion told The Sun: ‘It’s still early days but we’re both very excited and can’t wait to be parents.’

The couple, who tied the knot back in May of this year, are delighted by the news. British boxing champ of Pakistan origin Amir Khan married his American bride Faryal Makhdoom in a lavish ceremony at the glitzy Waldorf Astoria in New York. The 26-year-old told The Sun: ‘Our families are delighted and we’re blessed to have their support and guidance.’The Bolton-born star enjoyed a long-distance relationship with the 21-year-old political science student before enjoying a week-long elaborate Islamic ceremony in New York.

Following that the couple, who got engaged in January 2012, held an even bigger wedding in Amir's hometown of Bolton, with a reported 4,000 guests in attendance.
Speaking at the time of the wedding to Hello magazine Amir said: 'I've lived the young life, I've done everything I've wanted to do. Now is the right time to settle down and start my own family.'The 26 year old will also hold a huge ceremony in his native Bolton, England for 4,000 guests, including his fellow fighters Ricky Hatton and David Haye.

Recently, the couple found their relationship rocked after reports alleged that Amir had cheated on Faryal twice in one day.At the time the Sun reported that the sports star had fooled around with two women while on holiday in Marbella with his friends.

Another woman claimed she had met up with the boxer on four consecutive days and spent two nights at his villa during the holiday. After the big pregnancy news we hope the couple has settled down to enjoy parental bliss.

David Beckham encountered a car accident outside LA home with son Brooklyn

England Football Team's former Captain David Beckham reportedly crashed into another car as he pulled out of his Beverly Hills home. The ex-England football captain was allegedly in his black Range Rover Sport with what looked like his son Brooklyn, 14, in the front passenger seat when the collision reportedly occurred at 2.30pm on Friday.

Onlookers say David, 38, pulled out of his driveway and hit an oncoming car being driven by a woman. He reportedly reversed back into his drive way and waited within his residence before police arrived to question him about the incident.Police were seen leaving his home, then interviewing witnesses nearby for more information about the accident.
Damage was clearly visible on the white Acura 4x4, as well as David's expensive Range Rover Sport, where the bumper was hanging off the front. The former sports star bought the car in 2010 which is estimated to be worth between $60,595 and $76,195.It's not the first time David and Brooklyn have been in a car crash together.  Back in 2011 the two had a ‘lucky escape’ when their vehicle was involved in a multiple-car pile-up on one of the busiest freeways in Los Angeles.

ICC WT20 Qualifier 2013:All 16 squads for ICC WT20 Qualifier UAE 2013 confirmed

Some of the very best cricketers from ICC’s Associate and Affiliate members will assemble in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) next month when the 16-team ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier UAE 2013 (WT20Q) will be staged across six venues in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. All 16 squads for the event, which will be staged from 15 to 30 November, have now been finalised.

At stake in the UAE will be the six available places in the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014, which is scheduled to be played in the first half of next year.

The tournament will see the 16 sides split into two groups of eight, a total of 72 matches will be played over 15 days and the sides that top the two groups at the conclusion of the group stages will automatically qualify for Bangladesh 2014.

The sides that finish second and third in each of the two groups will play cross-over matches with the two winners also progressing to the ICC World Twenty20 2014.

The sides that finish fourth and fifth in each of the two groups will also play cross-over matches, with the winners of these two matches then playing the losers of the second v third cross-over fixtures; the victors of these matches will then also progress into the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014.

Ireland will be defending the title it won in 2012, when it, alongside Afghanistan, qualified for the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012.

Ireland, which missed the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007 but appeared in 2009, 2010 and 2012, has named a formidable side as it has retained no less than 11 players from the 2012 campaign that saw it win the last Qualifier. Returning to the UAE will be captain William Porterfield, Alex Cusack, ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year 2012 George Dockrell, Trent Johnston, Ed Joyce, John Mooney, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O’Brien, Paul Stirling, Max Sorensen and Gary Wilson.

The four new faces in the Ireland squad for this event are Niall O’Brien, Andrew McBrine, James Shannon and Stuart Thompson. O’Brien is a veteran of 58 ODIs and 20 T20Is and is joined by the 20-year-old McBrine ,who featured in the recent ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2012.

Shannon, a 23-year-old middle-order batsman, has appeared for Ireland a handful of times while Thompson, travelled with the side to the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012.

Afghanistan has named 11 players in the squad who were members of the side that finished runner-up to Ireland last year in the ICC WT20Q. Captain Mohammad Nabi, along with Merwais Ashraf, Hamid Hassan, Nawroz Mangal, Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Shahzad, Karim Sadiq, Samiullah Shinwari, Shapor Zadran, Dawlat Khan Zadran and Noor Ali Zadran will again be returning with a challenge to guide their side to its third successive ICC World Twenty20.

Peter Borren will once again lead the Netherlands, which played in the 2007 WT20 and upset England in the tournament opener at Lord’s. Other stayers from the 2012 qualifier event, where the side finished fourth, include Wesley Barresi, Mudassar Bukhari, Atse Buurman, Tim Gruijters, Ahsan Malik, Stephan Myburgh, Pieter Seelaar and Michael Swart.

While the Dutch side will be without the services of Ryan ten Doeschate, the ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year in 2008, 2010 and 2011, it will be bolstered by returning all-rounder Daan van Bunge. The 31-year-old veteran has represented the men in orange in 37 ODIs and 12 T20Is.

Another popular name in the Associate and Affiliate world, Ashish Bagai of Canada, will be returning to lead the side for the Qualifier after a brief hiatus from the game.

The event will also see the return of Geraint Jones for Papua New Guinea; the 36-year-old will be representing his country of birth once again, having been born in Kundiawa, the capital of the Simbu province in PNG.

Another familiar name that will be seen around the tournament will be the assistant coach of Scotland, the former England all-rounder and current Durham captain Paul Collingwood.

The player eligibility criteria can be found by clicking here.
