Nepal’s ex National football team’s captain Rakesh Shrestha hangs up his boots

One of Nepal’s most well known footballers has hung up his national team boots.
Former national team captain Rakesh Shrestha, 34, was given a grand send-off by the All Nepal Football Association and his fans on Saturday.He was awarded the best player award previous year and was granted a home by ANFA. Speaking on the occasion, the former defender said: “I am not in the national team for the last one-and-a-half year and it is really painful not to be there.

“But I decided to quit as my physique no longer supports me. Besides this, the emergence of young and talented players also made to take this decision.”

According to the available records, Shrestha is the only player to win 50 caps for the national team in official tournaments

He also holds the record of playing 34 consecutive matches since his debut in the senior national team in December 1998 for the 13th Asian Games held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Shrestha began his career with the AFC U-16 qualifiers in Birgunj in 1997.
He said he would continue playing for the Nepal Police Club “as long as the club wanted” him.

“Overall my footballing career has been a successful one and getting the opportunity to captain the national side was the most memorable time of my whole career,” said Shrestha.
