Mahela Jayawardene Reappointed SL Captain After Dilshan Resigns

Mahela Jayawardene was today reappointed captain of the Sri Lankan squad for all three formats of the game hours after Tillakaratne Dilshan resigned from the post following the team’s dismal showing in South Africa.
The 34-year-old’s immediate assignment would be to lead the team in the triangular series involving hosts Australia and India starting early February, sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage announced today.
Angelo Mathews was named vice-captain of the 15-member squad which also included Dilshan.

All-rounder Farveez Maharoof and pacer Chanaka Welegedara were recalled after having last played an ODI for Sri Lanka in June 2010.
The two were brought in place of Kosala Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando, both of whom who were part of the squad for the recent ODI series in South Africa.
Appointed to the hot seat by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Jayawardene led the side to the World Cup final in 2007.
The 35-year-old Dilshan sent in his resignation from South Africa, where Sri Lanka concluded their disastrous tour yesterday.

Sri Lanka lost the three-match Test series 1-2 and the five-match ODI series 2-3.
“Dilshan has resigned as captain in all three formats of the game,” SLC said in a statement.
“Members of the executive committee take this opportunity to thank Dilshan for his commitment and dedication during his tenure as the national captain,” the Board said.
“We also wish him well as he continues to represent Sri Lanka as a national player.”

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been retained by Pune Warriors ahead of Indian Premier League's (IPL) fifth edition.

Ganguly, who was ignored at the 2011 Players' Auction in January 2011, came into the Pune franchise as a mid-season replacement for injured Ashish Nehra. He will be part of the team as a player and mentor.
The 39-year-old is reported to have been retained for USD 400,000, his base price in the last edition.

"He (Ganguly) has been one of India's greatest and most inspirational cricketers. We have no doubt that his presence in the team will boost our prospects in the IPL, and motivate the boys to excel themselves," Pune Warriors director Abhijit Sarkar said in a statement Saturday.

Lamont Peterson appeals to WBA against Amir Khan rematch

World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation Light Welterweight Champion Lamont Peterson has launched an appeal against the WBA's decision to grant a rematch to former champion Amir Khan.
Last week, a rematch of the light-welterweight bout was ordered by the WBA after Peterson won in controversial circumstances.

But the Peterson's camp decided to contest this judgment, The BBC reports.

"We are confident the WBA will overturn its decision," said Peterson's camp.

They have also sent a written appeal to the WBA and have urged them to recognize Lamont Peterson as the true and final WBA light-welterweight world champion.

Khan reaction came through his Twitter account in which he said; "Now I've heard Peterson is appealing against the WBA ruling a rematch. He said he was going to give me a rematch after the fight so why go against it?"

Peterson's camp has claimed that Khan's Khan withdrew his appeal to the IBF because his case did not stand up.

Players to Watch
Mali has three of Africa's top players on its national team -- Seydou KeitaFrederic Kanouteand Mahamadou DiarraDidier Drogba is one of the best players the game has ever seen; he'll be leading The Elephants (Cote d'Ivoire) along with Emmanuel Eboue and Yaya Toure.Dede AyewMichael Essien and Asamoah Gyan are all excellent players from GhanaSee more about Africa's top players...
Most of Africa's best players play in Europe. It's a struggle for them to get the time off and play for their home country. A lack of practice with their country team mates' means they don't always perform as well as they're expected to.

Sudan is the only East African nation in the tournament. But Sudan started qualifying as one country, and is now two.Players from both Sudan, and what is now South Sudan, will be playing to win and hopefully this will be a chance for the people to feel a bond of unity. Libya and Tunisia will both still be playing despite going through revolutions in 2011. That's the power of soccer in Africa, nothing will stop the game from being played! Although the Libyan team will not be playing in their traditional green shirts, instead they'll be sporting new shirts bearing the pre-Gadhafi national flag. Togo did play for a spot in the tournament despite the horrific attack they endured in Angola, 2010. Unfortunately they failed to qualify. Egypt also failed to qualify despite winning the tournament a record seven times, including the last tournament played in Angola in 2010.
The Cup of Nations is Africa's biggest regular sporting event and it's held every 2 years .Although the plan is to hold another tournament in 2013 so the tournament does not clash with the World Cup (2014). Sixteen national teams made it through the preliminary stages for the 2012 Cup of Nations
