The long-awaited sixth
National Games has begun at Dhangadhi Stadium on Sunday. President Dr Ram Baran
Yadav inaugurated the Games, two-and-half hour opening ceremony has started at
the refurbished Dhangadhi Stadium, which has a seating capacity of around
4,500. Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai, Finance Minister Barshaman Pun
‘Ananta’ and Sports Minister Kamala Rokka and top political leaders are also
attend to grace the ceremony.

The ceremony saw athletes’
march-pass, informative presentation on Far-west region’s tourism and
performance from 2,500 students reflecting local culture and traditions.
Olympian and four-time South
Asian Games gold medallist Deepak Bista once again light the Games cauldron.
Taekwondo star Deepak, who hails from Far-west, will received the Games torch
from a group of seven former Olympians before lighting the cauldron.
Olympians Jit Bahadur KC,
Krishna Bahadur Basnet, Hari Bahadur Rokaya, Raj Kumari Pandey, Bimala Rana
Magar, Bishnu Bahadur Singh and Dambar Dutta Bhatta will bring the Games torch
at the stadium following a rally that started from Lumbini.

After being deprived as the
hosts twice, Far-Western Region has finally welcomed 3,322 players for the
Nepali sports extravaganza. The Far-West was deprived of hosting the event in
1999 before it was called off last year due to delayed construction and budget
crunch.
The National Games will
feature 31 events with Dhangadhi hosting 15 and Kanchanpur paying host to 13
events. Pokhara will host golf, while cycling events take place in Kavre.
Tennis, squash and shooting will be held in Lalitpur, while Birgunj will host
swimming. A total of 213 gold medals are to be won in the Games.
