Euro Cup 2012 – Team profile: Denmark Know the participating Team: Denmark

There is less than 12 hours to begin the world’s one of the most exciting tournament euro Cup 2012 where all 16 qualified European giants will fight for the cup.
www.anantasports.com is bringing the profiles of all the participating team to its readers and here it is Denmark.

Denmark is taking part in the tournaments under the guidance of coach Morten Olsen. Morten Olsen’s Side qualified for the Euro cup after topping Group H ahead of Portugal and Norway. Denmark started their qualifying campaign with a slender win over Iceland at home before being outclassed by Portugal in Oporto.

The Danes have a history of punching above their weight in the European Championship. The small Scandinavian country finished fourth in 1964 before going one better 20 years later when they fell to Spain in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals.

Denmark then pulled off one the greatest shocks in the history of the tournament in 1992 when they beat the Netherlands in the semis, thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, before disposing of Germany to lift the trophy.

Morten Olsen's men recovered in spectacular fashion, however, and won four out of their next five games to set up a winner-take-all encounter against Portugal on the final matchday.
Denmark has a rich and cherished history in this competition. The stand out highlight is most certainly the triumph at Euro 1992. This is the 7th time they have qualified for the tournament, with 2 semi-final appearances, a quarterfinal appearance as well as 3 first round exits to go alongside their single tournament win.

Coach Morten Olsen
The former Denmark captain made over 100 appearances for his country before hanging up his boots in 1989. He is now a mainstay on the Danish touchline and has been in charge of the national team for the last 11 years.

The Danes have qualified for three out of the last five major tournaments under the tutelage of Olsen, however, the 62-year-old came under heavy criticism when he failed to guide the team to Euro 2008.

Captain Daniel Agger
The Liverpool defender was handed the captain's armband in August 2011 when Olsen dropped a 'stressed' Christian Poulsen from the squad for the encounter against Norway in September.
The resilient centre-back personifies the battling spirit of the current Denmark team but injuries continue to plague the 26-year-old as he missed the side's last two qualifiers, including the vital match against Portugal.
The fans of Danish Dynamite will be hoping Agger can shake off the injury bug and play a leading role in Poland and Ukraine.

Player to watch: Dennis Rommedahl
The veteran winger has rolled back the years with some scintillating performances for Denmark in the last 12 months. He was one of the Danes' best players at the World Cup last summer and played an integral role in helping the squad qualify for the Euro 2012 finals.
The Brondby man has made over 100 appearances for his country and will look to add to his 21 goals in what could be his swansong for the national team.

Denmark Squad for Euro 2012:
Coach: Morten Olsen
Goalkeepers: Stephan Andersen (Evian), Anders Lindegaard (Manchester United), Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester)
Defenders: Lars Jacobsen (FC Copenhagen), Michael Silberbauer (BSC Young Boys), Simon Busk Poulsen (AZ Alkmaar), Daniel Wass (Evian), Simon Kjaer (Roma), Daniel Agger (Liverpool), Andreas Bjelland (FC Nordsjaelland), Jores Okore (FC Nordsjaelland)
Midfielders: William Kvist (Stuttgart), Christian Poulsen (Evian), Niki Zimling (Brugge), Jakob Poulsen (FC Midtjylland), Lasse Schone (Nijmegen), Christian Eriksen (Ajax)
Forwards: Dennis Rommedahl (Brondby), Tobias Mikkelsen (FC Nordsjaelland), Michael Krohn-Dehli (Brondby), Thomas Kahlenberg (Evian), Nicklas Bendtner (Sunderland), Nicklas Pedersen (Groningen)
Style of play: Coach Morten Olsen favours a flexible 4-3-3- formation, although he's also been known to use 4-2-3-1. Regardless of the setup, Denmark makes as much use out of the flanks. The fullbacks get forward as much as possible, and Dennis Rommedahl provides the attack width down the right, while Michael Krohn-Dehli on the left serves as the link between midfield and the front man. Both will try to use their speed before cutting into the box, or serving up crosses for striker Nicklas Bendtner. Operating in the hole behind Bendtner is Christian Eriksen, who pulls the creative strings in the centre of midfield, backed up by two defensive midfielders, William Kvist and Niki Zimling.
