AFC U-19 Champion ship: The AFC U-19 Championship 2012 to begin in UAE today

The 2012 AFC U-19 Championship will be the 37th edition of the tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation. The AFC approved UAE as hosts of the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship on 23 November 2011. The top four teams will qualify directly to the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The AFC U-19 Championship, formerly known as AFC Youth Championship, is an annual football competition organised by the sport's Asian governing body, Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The competition has been held since 1959. Between 1959 and 1978 the contest held every year, since 1980 it has been held every two years. The tournament has been played in a number of different formats during its existence. Currently it consists of two stages, similarly to AFC's other Asian Championship competitions. The qualifying stage is open to all AFC members, and the final stage is contested between sixteen teams. The top four teams will qualify directly to the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.The last tournament was held in China. In last episode of the tournament North Korea was crowned champion after beating Australia 3-2.

Sixteen teams were qualified for the tournaments after 36 teams from Asian region played qualification round where all the teams were grouped into seven different groups and top two teams from all the groups and two teams from the third place qualifiers were selected. The qualified teams for the final are Australia , China PR   , Iran ,Iraq, Japan ,Jordan , Kuwait , North Korea ,Qatar ,Saudi Arabia , South Korea , Syria , Thailand,United Arab Emirates , Uzbekistan  and Vietnam.
