Africa Cup of nations 2012: Zambia win African Cup of Nations via penalty shootout

Zambia returned to the scene of its worst sporting tragedy to make it a place of unrestrained joy after winning a nerve-racking African Cup of Nations final Sunday on penalties over tournament favourite Ivory Coast.Stophira Sunzu scored the deciding sudden-death spot-kick after Gervinho missed for the Ivorians, giving Zambia a 8-7 win on penalties after the teams were locked at 0-0 through 120 minutes.

Zambia’s first African title came, poignantly, in Libreville and just a few kilometers from where almost the entire Zambian team was killed in a plane crash 19 years ago off the coast of the Gabon capital. In a game of relentless drama and high emotion, the most significant moment was perhaps when Kalusha Bwalya, a member of the tragic team who was not on the ill-fated aircraft in 1993 and is now Zambia’s football federation president, lifted the Cup of Nations trophy up in one hand on the pitch, almost defiantly.
It was Zambia’s first game in Libreville since that the plane crash.

“There was a sign of destiny, a force within us. Maybe it was meant to be,” Zambia coach Herve Renard said. “I can’t explain it, honestly I can’t explain it. Something was written in the stars. It was not me.”Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba also missed a 70th-minute penalty to send the dramatic decider to extra time and then a shootout and boost Zambia’s feeling that they were meant to win the African Cup here.
After both sides made their first seven penalties, Kolo Toure gave Zambia a chance at victory when his effort was saved by Kennedy Mweene. But Kalaba Rainford sent his effort high over the crossbar.

But Arsenal‘s Gervinho faltered as well and Sunzu made no mistake when it was his turn, drilling his penalty past Boubacar Barry for the title-clinching moment that capped a compelling, storybook ending.
“It was not the right time,” Renard said of Rainford’s miss, “but Sunzu was strong and he gave us the African Cup.”
The Zambians, who had watched the final few penalties on their knees with arms linked, erupted in joy and chased after Sunzu.
“That’s (the plane crash) the thing that’s been driving us through the tournament,” goalkeeper Mweene said. “We have been thinking about that since we went into camp.
“It’s one of those games. We were playing against big names but…we had to do it. The team spirit and the brotherhood in the team was the key for us.”
Sunzu ran to the team’s fans behind the goal to begin the celebrations. The current players had pledged to return to Libreville and win their first major trophy to honour the 25 Zambian players and officials who died in the crash.
The Gabonese fans at a packed Stade de l’Amitie were also won over and were chanting “Chipolopolo,” the Zambian team’s nickname, at the end. It was more than just a neutral crowd backing the underdog. The home fans seemed to be offering their support after the Zambians lost so many players just off their shores.
Drogba hit his regular-time penalty way over the crossbar after Gervinho was fouled, and then looked up at the sky in frustration. And even though the Chelsea striker scored in the shootout, Ivory Coast still failed to end a 20-year wait for a second African title despite being highly rated and everyone’s pick to win.

It was the Ivorians first loss in six games at this tournament after it also went through qualifying with a perfect six wins from six.
“Zambia really believed in their victory,” Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui said. “What else can I tell you? It’s a very big disappointment. We didn’t expect such a difficult game from the Zambians.”
Zambia captain Christopher Katongo hit the post in the opening five minutes of extra time, but the underdogs were hanging on in the latter part of the match, as Max Gradel sent a shot agonisingly wide in the 88th for Ivory Coast and the powerful star-studded favourite surged forward in the final 15 minutes of extra time.
Zambia had already been hampered when Joseph Musonda was forced off with injury after just 10 minutes of what was meant to be a memorable 100th match for him. The veteran defender was in tears as he left the field and was consoled by teammates.
Gervinho won the penalty for Drogba when he was dragged down by midfielder Isaac Chansa just inside the area. But when Drogba missed and looked up helplessly at the sky, the Zambians saw it as a further sign that the win was destined to be theirs.
“We were not the favourites of the final, obviously,” Chansa said, “but we believed in ourselves as players. It was written somewhere, you could see that from the miss of Drogba.”

Both teams are on the verge of making history. The Ivorians will be ending a 20-year trophy drought should they secure the title, which would be their second of the competition since its inception.

Zambia have been waiting for a long time and on two occasions – 1974 and 1994 – they were denied a chance to clinch the cup in the final, finishing as runners-up in both years.

It will be difficult to call Sunday’s final in Libreville, but it is very easy to predict a close game between two determined teams hungry for nothing less than the ultimate prize.

The Elephants have been on the rampage at the 28th edition of the continental showpiece. They have not yet lost a game in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and are yet to concede a goal. It has been torrid but well-deserved progress, however, for the Chipolopolo. They can also boast of a strong record at this competition, having won four games along with one draw to reach this stage.

There are no suspensions or injury worries in either team, and any changes to the starting 11 that took part in the semi-finals on both sides is likely to be minimal.

Facts About Zambia and Ivory Coast:

  • Cote d’Ivoire beat Ghana – the same team that Zambia defeated to qualify for the final - in 1992 to claim their first ever continental trophy.
  • Francis Zahoui will become the first local coach in the country to have won the Nations Cup without conceding a defeat should his side emerge as winners.
  • Elephants captain Didier Drogba is one of three leading goalscorers who are still in the competition, with three strikes to his name.
  • Zambia will be lifting their maiden Afcon trophy on Sunday if they beat Cote d’Ivoire.
  • Among the three top goalscorers in this competition, Zambia can boast two, Christopher Katongo (pictured right) and Emmanuel Mayuka.
  • The southern Africans were not tipped as pre-tournament favourites but knocked out two teams that were expected to be in their current position – Senegal and Ghana.

Africa Cup Of Nations 2012:Mali Defeated Ghana to secure Third Place in Africa Cup Of nations!!

Mali defeated Ghana 2-0 in the third place match at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in the Estadio de Bata in Equatorial Guinea on Saturday.
Forward Cheick Diabate scored both goals for the Eagles as defender Isaac Vorsah saw red for a second bookable offence as the Black Stars ended the match with 10 men.
The game started with vigour as both teams searched for an early hold on the encounter. Jordan Ayew, who started upfront for Ghana in place of Asamoah Gyan, had the first opportunity on 21 minutes, but his shot from the edge of the box was held by Oumar Sissoko
The Malians took the lead two minutes later when Diabate scored from close range after Adam Kwarasey had spilled a resulting shot off a corner kick. It was the Bordeaux striker who reacted quickest ahead of Vorsah and Jonathan Mensah to put the ball past the goalkeeper.
The game then went into slumber as both teams could not secure the upper hand as tension began to soar. Jordan Ayew received a yellow card for his challenge on Samba Sow as the game seemed to turn into a brawl.

Mali missed an opportunity to double their lead when Samba Diakite’s shot was kept out by Kwarasey. Diakite had dispossessed two Ghanaian defenders before seeing his shot saved.
A few moments later, the younger Ayew brother once again tested Sissoko with a snap-shot, but his attempt was saved by the goalkeeper.
Vorsah earned his first yellow card for a challenge on Diabate before the end of the first period. The Ghanaians then rang in the changes as they searched for an equaliser. Prince Tagoe and Sulley Muntari came on for Samuel Inkoom and Mohammed Abu as the pace in attack quickened.

Muntari saw a goal disallowed for offside on 53 minutes before Vorsah got himself into trouble for a high boot and was sent off as a result of his second yellow card offence.
The Ghanaians fought back but attempts to run through the Malian defence by Andre Ayew were frustrated as the Eagles began to dominate the game.
Their dominance was rewarded on 80 minutes when full-back Adama Tamboura’s inch perfect cross from the left was tapped in by Diabate for the Eagles’ second goal.
With the victory, the Malians avenged their group stage loss to the Ghanaians as they secured their first Afcon medal since 1972, when they finished second.

Zambia to Face Ivory Coast in the Final of Africa Cup Of nations 2012!!

Zambia reached the African Cup of Nations final for the first time since 1994, upsetting Ghana 1-0 Wednesday night to advance to the championship against tournament favorite Ivory Coast.
Emmanuel Mayuka scored in the 78th minute for Zambia, tied for 71st in the FIFA rankings.
Later at Libreville, Gabon, Ivory Coast defeated Mali 1-0 on a 45th-minute goal by Arsenal forward Gervinho.
Sunday's final will be at Libreville, the site of Zambia's worst sporting disaster in 1993. A plane carrying Zambia's national team to a World Cup qualifier in Senegal crashed just minutes after taking off, killing 25 players and officials.
"There's something written that we have to go to play to honor the memories of the Zambia national team that died in 1993," said Frenchman Herve Renard, Zambia's coach. "It was catastrophic for the nation. The 12 million people of Zambia are waiting for us to go back to Libreville. Immediately (after) we arrive, we will go to the place. We just have to think of them and play for them and play for Zambia because it's a fantastic country."

Ghana, which beat the United States en route to the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals, could have gone ahead in the eighth minute, but Asamoah Gyan's penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene. In the World Cup quarterfinals against Uruguay two years ago, Gyan's penalty kick in overtime went off the crossbar, and the Black Stars were eliminated in a shootout.
Mayuka entered for the Copper Bullets at the start of the second half. Ghana, 26th in the FIFA rankings, finished a man short after Derek Boateng was ejected in the 84th.
"This is the greatest moment ever a player can have to play in the final," Zambia captain Christopher Katongo said. "We go to the final without any pressure. We have to take this cup. This is an opportunity. It doesn't come every day."
At Libreville, 18th-ranked Ivory Coast went ahead when Gervinho capitalized on a defensive error to race half the length of the field and shoot past goalkeeper Soumaila Diakite.
Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure both hit posts as Ivory Coast dominated 69th-ranked Mali to reach the final without conceding a goal at the tournament. Les Elephants are seeking their first title since 1992.
Didier Drogba's Elephants, who defeated Mali 1-0 courtesy of a brilliant solo effort by Arsenal striker Gervinho, in the Gabonese capital later.
