FIFA World Cup 2014 Qualifier:Jordan to battle Uruguay for Brazil berth

Nepal Opponents Jordan will play against South American Giant Uruguay to qualify for the World Cup 2014.Jordan’s opponents in the FIFA World Cup 2014 intercontinental playoff will be Uruguay after La Celestefinished fifth in the CONMEBOL qualifiers following their 3-2 win over Argentina on Tuesday.

As Asia’s Brazil 2014 qualifying hopefuls Jordan where focusing on their campaign to reach the 2015 AFC Asian Cup with a home tie against Oman, Uruguay were taking on Argentina in Montevideo needing a victory to ensure they finished no lower than fifth in the nine-team South American qualification standings.

Edinson Cavani netted the match-winner five minutes into the second half after Maxi Rodriguez has twice pulled Argentina level (15th and 41st) following Cristian Rodriguez’s sixth-minute opener and a 34th minute penalty from Luis Suarez.

But Uruguay's win was not enough as Chile and Ecuador claimed the final automatic South American qualifying berths behind regional group winners Argentina and second-placed Colombia.

Saluting his team for a "dignified" end to their regional program, Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez indicated they must not take Jordan lightly, despite their rivals being ranked 73rd to their own seventh in FIFA’s global list.

"Like all Uruguayans I hope we make it through (but) we would be very wrong to think Jordan cannot cause us problems," Tabarez warned.

November’s two-leg meeting with Jordan marks the fourth consecutive World Cup qualification playoff for Uruguay and although this represents the first meeting against an AFC member association they have face Australia twice prior to the Socceroos’ switch from Oceania to the Asian Football Confederation in 2006.

Uruguay defeated the Australia in the playoffs for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the first to be hosted in Asia, before the Socceroos turned the tables on the South Americans with victory on penalties in the playoff for Germany 2006.

AFC U-16 Qualifier:AFC Cleared the criteria to determine the Top 5 best runners Up

AFC has clarified the criteria to determine the best runners-up team among all groups in the AFC U-16 Championship qualifiers. The criteria is part of the competitions regulations which were approved by the relevant AFC committees.

Comparing the runners-up teams over an equal number of matches is the key of identifying the best runners-up. In order to ensure equality when comparing the runners-up team of all the groups, the results of the matches between the runner-up team and the bottom-placed team (for Group C, D, E, I and J, which consist four teams) or two sides from the bottom (for Group A, G and H, which consists of five teams) will be considered null and void due to Group B and F having only three teams participating in the qualifiers.

The best runner-up team among those ranked second in the groups will be determined as follows:

1. Greater number of points obtained from group matches identified by AFC

2. Goal difference resulting from group matches identified by AFC

3. Greater number of goals scored in group matches identified by AFC

4. Fewer number of points calculated according to the number of yellow and red cards received by the team in the group matches identified by AFC

5. Drawing of lots.

Afghanistan get ICC Associate membership

Afghanistan have been granted the Associate membership of the ICC to become the 38th country to get that status. The decision was taken by the ICC at its ongoing annual conference, which ends on June 29 in London. The nomination request had been sent by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) last year based on the continuous progress made by Afghanistan, especially in its cricket development.

"Afghanistan is the only country that receives the Associate membership in a short period of time in reward to the efforts Afghanistan made for the promotion of cricket," Dr Noor Muhammad, CEO of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), said on the ACC website. Becoming an Associate would mean higher funding and, importantly, more exposure for the passionate and cricket-starved players from Afghanistan, a war-torn country. So far, the ICC was paying $700,000 in annual funding to Afghanistan, which is now likely to rise to $850,000 based on the Associate status.
Afghanistan became an Affiliate member of the ICC in 2001 when they travelled to Pakistan for their first tour. Languishing at one time in the fifth division of the World Cricket League, Afghanistan won the hearts of global cricket fans when they nearly qualified for the 2011 World Cup, but they lost to Canada and could not surpass Kenya's net run rate in the World Cup qualifiers. Immediately, they were granted the ODI status, valid until 2013.

Afghanistan have also featured in the last two editions of the ICC's World Twenty20 (2010 and 2012). They have played ODIs against two Test-playing nations so far, Pakistan and Australia, and despite losing both the matches, players like Hamid Hassan and Mohammad Nabi turned heads with their impressive performances.

Over the last two years, the ACB has undergone organisational restructuring in a bid to provide better leadership and find qualified staff to run cricket administration. They are currently developing their domestic cricket infrastructure, and have signed a two-year deal with the Pakistan Cricket Board for the development of Afghanistan cricket ahead of the 2015 World Cup. The ICC has played a big role in the upliftment of Afghanistan cricket and in April this year, granted $422,000 as part of the targeted assistance programme.
Afghanistan Cricket Team

Afghanistan is the eighth country in the Asian region to become an Associate member after Hong Kong (1969), Kuwait (2005), Malaysia (1967), Nepal (1996), Singapore (1974), Thailand (2005) and UAE (1990). "It is a tremendous achievement by Afghanistan, the current administrators have worked very hard to advance Afghanistan's interests and much credit goes to Dr Noor and his team at the Afghanistan Cricket Board," Bandula Warnapura, ACC development manager, said.

Asia cup Cricket 2014:Bangladesh to host Asia Cup 2014

The 2014 Asia Cup will be held in Bangladesh after India, who had originally agreed to play hosts, cited a packed international schedule as the main reason for being unable to organise the tournament. The likely dates for the tournament will be February 24 to March 8. The decision was taken at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) board meeting on April 8 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where India informed the other ACC members that they were focused instead on finalising the itinerary for the New Zealand tour, scheduled to be held in February-March next year.

It is understood that Bangladesh volunteered to host the Asia Cup and even decided to postpone the scheduled tri-series involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which was to be held around the same period. According to an official privy to the minutes of the meeting, the dates could be changed again considering India have been facing "hiccups" in negotiating dates with Cricket New Zealand.
The BCCI has been trying to convince New Zealand Cricket to trim their schedule of the New Zealand tour to two Tests, two ODIs and two T20Is to enable India to participate in the Asia Cup. The ICC's Future Tours Programme (FTP) has India scheduled to play three Tests, five ODIs and a single Twenty20 international.

Hosting the Asia Cup does throw Bangladesh's FTP schedules into disarray. According to the FTP, Bangladesh are set to host Sri Lanka for two Tests and three ODIs from the second week of February. A tri-nation series is also scheduled involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan immediately after, and just before the World Twenty20s begin on March 16.

2022 World Cup could be played in winter - FIFA

Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke on Saturday confirmed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar could be moved to the winter if research shows holding the tournament in the region's intense summer heat would be dangerous for players.
Since being awarded the right to host the event, Qatar's tournament organisers have had to deal with a barrage of questions about the suitability of staging the World Cup in searing June and July temperatures, which can reach up to 50C.
Fifa, the game's world governing body, had previously suggested that Qatar would have to make the request to move the tournament. But speaking at the International Football Association Board meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland, Valcke became the first senior Fifa official to admit that the event could be moved if his organisation received strong medical advice that it needed to do so.

"The Fifa ExCo has the power to make decisions and if at the Fifa ExCo this issue starts to be a real point for discussion then why not, and then again maybe the Fifa ExCo will say based on medical reports or whatever we really have to look at playing the World Cup not in summer, but in winter," he said.

"I am not saying that the case is closed, but what I'm saying is as long as we have not fixed the international calendar all alternatives are open."

UEFA president Michel Platini has reiterated his call to move the Qatar tournament to winter and Valcke said the fact the international calendar had not been fixed beyond 2018 made moving the 2022 finals possible.

"Qatar has to tell us, 'we want to move the World Cup from summer to winter'," Valcke said.
"I can tell you there is no working group within Fifa thinking and working on what it means to move the World Cup from summer to winter for the time being.

"The international calendar has been agreed for 2015-2018, meaning that we kept open all potential for period 2019 to 2022. We have time.

"We in Fifa have just said we are waiting for you (Qatar) to officially ask Fifa to look at the potential to move the World Cup from summer to winter - and that has not happened yet."

Valcke also said that it would need the agreement of all of football, and so far the Premier League have been fiercely opposed to any interruption of the domestic season.

"Qatar is perfectly aware and 2014 is not the deadline. It can be even in 2015," Valcke added.
"The most important thing is to make sure work with all stakeholders and make sure there is full agreement with all parties, leagues, clubs, and we would have to find eight weeks in the mid-season to play the World Cup."

Dubai to bid for 2024 Olympics

Yousuf Yaqoob Alserkal, the vice president and chairman of the United Arab Emirate's National Olympic Committee (NOC), said here that the sheikhdom still plans to bid for future Olympic Games, despite a withdrawal of a bid for the 2020 edition.
Speaking at the sidelines of the Emerging Host Cities conference, a two-day forum on hosting major sporting events which started Tuesday, Alserkal said the Dubai committee, which was formed in 2008 to work out Olympic bidding procedures, was still in place and he confirmed that the sheikhdom will effectively submit a bid for 2024, Xinhua reports.

Dubai has all sorts of required infrastructure for athletic sports, swimming, football, tennis or basketball, said Alkersal, "so we think in general we would be ready to host a multi-sports events."
The UAE's NOC vice president added that Dubai proved to be ready when it hosted the 7th FIFA Club World Cup in 2010 and the 9th Asian Swimming Championships last month, besides organising annually the Dubai Duty Free Tennis event.
However, temperatures rise up to 50 degrees Celsius during summer amid high humidity. This would force Dubai to move the summer games to the winter months, which might reduce the emirate's chances against potential competing bidders.

Dubai was hit severely by the global financial crisis and was at the brink of bankruptcy end of 2009, which forced the government to put Olympic dreams on hold at that time. Dubai was financially saved by a USD 10 billion guarantee from neighbouring Abu Dhabi.

Dubai's economy is now witnessing a strong comeback. According to Dubai department of statistics, in the first six months of 2012, Dubai's real economy grew by 4.1 percent year on year, representing the highest half-year growth in five years.

India's AFC Challenge Cup Hosting bid in doubt

India were hoping to host the prestigious tournament for the second time in six years, but the AFC announced that the Philippines and Maldives were in the final shortlist.
India's desire to host the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup looks to be dead and buried as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) shortlisted Philippines and Maldives in its final list of names and have asked members of the AFC President's Cup and Challenge Cup to choose from among the two. Tajikstan was the other nation that had reportedly submitted a bid to host the prestigious tournament.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) are expectedly not amused as they look to demand an answer as to why India's name is missing even before the conclusion of the selection process.
"The final decision would only be taken in the competition committee meeting on November 28. However, we have received a letter from the AFC that there is no need for an inspection in India because they have already inspected all three stadiums (two in Delhi and one in Goa) here in the past," Das added.

India had hosted and won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008 that ensured their participation in the 2011 Asian Championship in Doha.

World's tallest tower opens to visitors in Tokyo!! Want to see?

The world's tallest tower and Japan's biggest new landmark, the Tokyo Skytree, opened to the public on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Nearly 8,000 visitors were expected to take high-speed elevators up to the observation decks of the 634-meter (2,080-foot) tower to mark its opening. Some reportedly waited in line more than a week to get the coveted tickets for a panoramic view, though Tuesday ended up being cloudy in Tokyo.
Tokyo SkyTree World Tallest Tower
Skytree is recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest tower, beating out the Canton Tower in China, which is 600 meters (1,968 1/2 feet). Guinness lists the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, at 828 meters (2,716 feet 6 inches), as the world's tallest building.
The world's tallest structure is Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which stands 828 meters (2,717 feet). That's in a different category because it's a skyscraper, not a tower.
The Skytree will serve as a broadcast tower for television and radio, along with being a tourist attraction. It replaces the 333-meter-tall (1,092 1/2-foot-tall) Tokyo Tower — a symbol of Japan's capital since 1958 — as the broadcast hub. Michihiko Katsuragi, 27, has watched construction of the tower since moving to the area in 2009, according to a report in the Mainichi Daily News.
"I felt like I was growing up at the same time," he was quoted as saying.
Kazutaka Hasegawa got in line on May 16 and was the first visitor to the Skytree on Tuesday, according to the Mainichi Daily News.
World Tallest tower Opens on May 22 2012 for Public
"As a resident of Sumida Ward, I feel a sense of satisfaction in being the first person to ascend the tower," Hasegawa was quoted as saying.
The Skytree has two observation decks, at 350 meters (1,148 feet) and at 450 meters (1,476 feet).
The upper deck can hold 900 people at a time and the lower deck 2,000, according to a report from the Japan Daily Press. Only 6,000 tickets to the decks will be sold daily and they are sold online through a lottery system, the report said
Burj Khalifa World Tallest Building
.The Skytree complex, which also includes a shopping area, was expected to draw about 200,000 visitors on Tuesday, according to the Daily Press.
In 2014, China is expected to complete the Shanghai Tower, which at 2,073 feet will be the country's tallest building, and the world's tallest after the Burj Dubai.
