ICC Champions Trophy 2013: India won the Final against India

What will Indian Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni expect more as he was the only captain to receive the entire Trophy that is given by ICC? The latest Trophy India won was ICC Champions Trophy 2013 as India beats England by five runs in nail-biting finish to Champions Trophy final after rain reduces game to 20-overs-a-side affair.
Indian Players Celebrating after Victory

After nearly six hours spent watching dark clouds spit down on Edgbaston, a voluble India-centric crowd was treated to a frenetic 20-over final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in which the team they supported squeaked home in the tightest of twilight finishes. Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first captain to have led his team to victory in all major ICC tournaments – the 50-over World Cup, the World Twenty20 and the Champions Trophy – buttressing his credentials as a leader of men, when his side won by five runs, successfully defending 129.
Shikhar Dhawan, Dhoni and Jadeja with their respective Trophy
When the toss happened as scheduled at 10am on a windy Sunday (June 23) morning, it appeared that the weather boffins had got it wrong, and with a full 50-over game on the cards under cloudy skies Alastair Cook put India in. From that moment on, the players had to be content watching from the confines of the dressing room till a 20-over game – made possibly by the extension of the cut off time to 8.30pm – got underway at 4.20pm.

From then on, though, there was no shortage of action. England’s bowlers, James Anderson and Stuart Broad first up, were sharp, and Rohit Sharma was the first to suffer, losing his stumps to an airy drive. Two brief interruptions for rain ensured that the batsmen did not have a chance to settle, but Shikhar Dhawan showed that he was up for the big final, rising in the air to uppercut Broad for the first six of the game.

While Dhawan continued his remarkable run in the tournament, Ravi Bopara triggered an unlikely collapse and India went from 50 for 1 to 66 for 5. Dhawan (31 from 24) slapped one to cover, and Suresh Raina and Dhoni fell off a double-wicket maiden. Raina holed out to mid-on and Dhoni carved one to third man.

At that point, England was well on top, and it took an innings of high quality from Virat Kohli and one of remarkable composure from Ravindra Jadeja to revive India. Kohli was at his beautiful best, drilling the ball all along the turf through cover, and when he picked a Broad short ball early and smacked it deep into the stands at square-leg, he set Jadeja off. A full ball from Anderson was met with the cleanest of Jadeja swings and the ball disappeared over long-off.

Kohli, with his 43, and Jadeja, with a late unbeaten 33 from only 25 balls, pushed India along to 129 for 7, a total that gave India a fighting chance.

And how they fought: fielders in the circle swarmed all over the England batsmen, attacking everything that came their way, and after the pace and swing of Umesh Yadav had accounted for Cook, the spinners put a lid on the scoring and applied pressure. With the ball gripping the surface, turning sharply, and affording the odd bit of extra bounce, R Ashwin set to work, having Jonathan Trott stumped down the leg side off the second ball of his spell. Joe Root, who was stifled by close-in fielders and worked over by Ashwin, top-edged a pull to fine-leg. When Jadeja won the tightest of decisions from third umpire Bruce Oxenford to send Ian Bell back stumped, England was 46 for 4 in the ninth over.

In their first spells, Ashwin and Jadeja had combined figures of 5-1-14-3, and it was only the introduction of Raina’s part-time offbreaks that released the pressure.

A 64-run partnership between Eoin Morgan and Bopara briefly threatened India’s sub-par score, but when Ishant Sharma dismissed both batsmen in the 18th over, England choked, losing four wickets for three runs in the space of eight balls, leaving it with 15 to get from the final over, bowled by Ashwin. England’s lower order swung at everything, and when six were needed off the last ball, the game had gone the complete distance. James Tredwell heaved at one that Ashwin held back, and the turn took the ball past the bat, leaving England stranded at 124 for 8.

2013 ICC Champions Trophy Final : Watch India vs England Live Stream Online

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has it all – ICC WT20 title, ICC Cricket World Cup (50-over) – but one. He is yet to win the ICC Champions Trophy. On the other hand, England has won only one premier ICC tournament till date – the WT20 title. They have never won a major ICC 50-over competition.
England and India will lock horns in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday with an aim to lift the trophy that has eluded them both all these years. However, the latter can still claim to have won the title once when they were declared the joint winners along with Sri Lanka in 2002. Of course, they would have loved not to share the spoils with their island neighbour. Now, India have another chance to have a go at the title and their captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be looking to complete his trophy cabinet with this final piece of silverware.

Alastair Cook, leading England in a major ICC tournament for the first time, will be eager to continue the good run and become the first skipper from his country to lift an ICC trophy in a 50-over competition. He must be confident to walk the extra mile this time because of the team that he has at his disposal and the imperious form that the English bowlers and batsmen have been in in this tourney. The last time England made it to the finals of this competition, West Indies stood in their way and handed them a heartbreaking defeat. Courtney Brown and Ian Bradshaw had staged a remarkable comeback to stitch an unbeaten 71-run stand to land West Indies the 2004 Champions Trophy – in England.
India, the current world champions and top-ranked ODI side, also came close to winning the title twice – in Kenya (2000) and Sri Lanka (2002). In Kenya, they were denied by Chris Cairns who struck an unbeaten century in the final while in Sri Lanka, the rain played spoilsport – twice. So, both these teams will be eager to make up for the past slips (natural or otherwise) on Sunday. It seems a fitting finale to the much debated competition which is to breathe its last as the ICC has finally decided to scrap it altogether due to the packed international calendar. It will be a battle of Indian batting v/s English bowling.

Indian batting, led by Shikhar Dhawan, has been the most consistent while their only concern remains the yet-to-be-tested middle order. The openers have provided them, unfailingly, with a fairly strong start, leaving the upcoming batsmen with the luxury to go hammer and tongs at will. Their strength will be up for a stern test in the event of a failure of the top order and when facing the English pace attack, it is very much a possibility.

James Anderson, even in the absence of the conventional swing, has done enough to trouble the batsmen. It is his consistency that has landed him 10 wickets in four games. The duo of Anderson and Stuart Broad was prominent in destroying South African hopes of a title in the semi-final when they shared five wickets between them.
A worrying factor for India is their death bowling. After Zaheer Khan, they haven’t been able to delegate the responsibility of halting the late charge in the final 10 overs of the innings. Their bowlers have got them the early breakthrough, but plugging the leakage when the batsmen are going after everything will be crucial in this match.

If the rain permits, on Sunday we are in for a close contest between the current two best ODI sides in the world.

Champions Trophy has been marred by controversies in the past and the same was expected this year too. However, England, to the surprise of many, have hosted a competitive event. Apart from the odd incident of a game between Australia and New Zealand being completely abandoned due to persistent rain, so far the tourney can be counted a success. It is a pity that a sleek and crisp Champions Trophy – a tournament that has a much superior claim of being the premier 50-over competition than the oversized World Cup – will cease to exist after the final on Sunday at Edgbaston.

Team news
India are highly unlikely to disturb their winning combination, and while England might want to go the same route they could have two temptations. James Tredwell has done enough to challenge Graeme Swann's status as the best ODI spinner in the country, but will England be able to overlook Swann's experience should he be fit? The only other change could be Tim Bresnan playing ahead of Steven Finn because Edgbaston can assist reverse swing. However, it will be difficult to leave out Finn against any Asian side.

England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 James Tredwell/Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn/Tim Bresnan

India 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Dinesh Karthik, 5 MS Dhoni, 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh Yadav

Pitch and conditions
The big concern is what is overhead. It rained a day before the final, and the weather is expected to play some part during the match, but will it do enough to affect what have been almost subcontinental conditions at Edgbaston? The pitch for this match hasn't been used previously, but If it retains enough moisture, the ball could seam around crazily as it did in the Cardiff semi-final.

Stats and trivia

· India and England have played only three knockout matches against each other. India won the 1983 World Cup semi-final and the 2002 tri-series final, both in England, but England won the 1987 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai.

· India have not lost a single wicket in the mandatory Powerplays this Champions Trophy. Their smallest opening stand has been 58, against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

· England have made it to four finals in ICC ODI tournaments without winning any of them.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013 Live Stream: Watch India Vs Pakistan Cricket Live

This was supposed to be the marquee clash of the league stage. Tickets for the game were sold out within 30 minutes of being made available online. It isn't a coincidence that the match is scheduled for Saturday primetime viewing in India and Pakistan and could have decided the group. Instead, to the organisers' dismay, we are left with a dead rubber as India have already qualified for the semi-finals and Pakistan are eliminated.
Unlike most dead rubbers though, there's still plenty of interest since it is still an India v Pakistan match. The number of contests between the two sides has decreased over the past few years due to the strained political relations between the two countries, and fans are still eager for any chance to see the great rivals face off.
One of India's proudest one-day records is that they have never lost to Pakistan in a World Cup game, having triumphed in all five encounters. Pakistan have a similarly spotless record against India in the Champions Trophy, though there have only been two clashes between the two sides.
ICC champions Trophy India Vs Pakistan Live
While Pakistan will be looking to extend that run in Birmingham, India will be looking forpayback after a stinging defeat in the one-day series at home earlier this year.
In that series, Pakistan showed off the potency of their bowling attack, and India's batsmen were left nonplussed. It will again be a confrontation between Pakistan's bowling might and India's batting strength. This time, MS Dhoni's side have some of the most in-form batsmen around. In contrast, Pakistan's batting has been seriously underwhelming, while India's bowlers, about whom there was much apprehension coming into the tournament, have not done too shabbily thus far.
If it would have been other league matches besides India Vs Pakistan then there wouldn’t have been any interest as this match has nothing to do with semifinal equation. India has already qualified for semi final as group winner from the group and Pakistan had already out of the Tournament. But the importantance of the game for Pakistan and India Both is not Less than the Final Clash.

Players to Watch:
Umesh Yadav was talked up as a quick bowler who could provide India's bowling with teeth, but though he has been pacy, he has consistently been taken for runs. After 19 ODIs, his career economy is an unflattering 6.32. He has the ability to deliver yorkers, and bowls the slower delivery as well, which means India will continue to look to him to solve the team's death-bowling issues.
Mohammad Hafeez is one of the senior figures in the Pakistan one-day side, and presumably the man who will take over when Misbah-ul-Haq retires. With Pakistan's batting struggling in recent games, Hafeez has also floundered - five of his last seven ODI innings are single-digit scores. He continues to be a handy offspinner, but Pakistan need him to pull his weight in batting as well.
Team news
Having already qualified, India have the opportunity to try out some of the others in the squad, but it is unlikely they will make any changes.
India: (probable) 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Dinesh Karthik, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Ishant Sharma
Pakistan also have the liberty to shuffle around their team. The bowling has been functioning well so it doesn't need much tinkering. One of the main questions will be whether Shoaib Malik gets another chance in the middle order. Imran Farhat has also had two failures, and it remains to be seen whether he stays in the side.
Pakistan: (probable) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Amin, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Wahab Riaz, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Mohammad Irfan
Pitch and conditions
It will be another chilly day in Birmingham, with a predicted maximum temperature of 14C. The forecast also suggests light rain through the afternoon. It hasn't been a run-filled wicket in Edgbaston so far, with a highest total of 269 in three matches. Expect another slow track.
Stats and Trivia
Malik's last 50-plus ODI score came in the 2009 Champions Trophy, against India
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have put on consecutive century stands for the first wicket. Before them, the last time India's openers put on back-to-back hundred partnerships was in 2007

ICC Champions Trophy 2013 Live Stream: Watch Ausralia Vs England Live Stream

Dear readers in the third Match of ICC Champions Trophy 2013 two teams of Group A Australia and England will face each Other in Birmingham."Australia in crisis" was how one respected English newspaper saw it after their disintegration against India in their final Champions Trophy warm-up. An irredeemable batting display saw them bowled out for 65 by India and, to make matters worse, the chronic back complaint that ruled their captain, Michael Clarke out of this match, has yet to respond to treatment. Whether it is really a crisis will become more apparent at Edgbaston on Saturday, but Australia, winners of the past two Champions Trophies, could certainly be in better shape.

Clarke therefore misses the first of 13 England v Australia clashes that will dominate a summer also containing five Tests, five ODIs and two T20s. He has not played a game since mid-March - the third Test against India - because of a weakness that has troubled him intermittently since he was 17, but he aggravated the condition on the long-haul flight from Australia. Australia should surely be looking for the best first-class flat beds they can find, even if the rest of the squad are put into cattle class.

George Bailey will stand in for Clarke with his usual affability. He can take consolation from the fact that the practice match against India will not appear in the official records because of the licence to play more than 11 players, and from a record which has seen Australia win their last six matches, including a 5-0 whitewash of West Indies.
England will find it a welcome change to be playing somebody different from New Zealand. They beat them 2-1 in New Zealand then lost by the same scoreline in England. It is time for a new challenge. It is not to decry New Zealand to observe that for many England fans the summer is about to begin for real.

Pitch and conditions
England is enjoying one of its most settled spells of summer weather in recent years and it is set to continue over the weekend. That could negate the threat of two new balls as batting conditions are more comfortable than anticipated. The bowlers can expect some more unsettled weather, especially in Cardiff.
Stats and trivia
Michael Clarke's attempts to get his back into shape ahead of back-to-back Ashes series included long bushwalks near Berrima in the New South Wales southern highlands with his fitness guru Duncan Kerr.
Kerr's other clients include the Australian children entertainers The Wiggles and he even played drums on one of their albums.
Jos Buttler's innings against New Zealand had the second highest strike-rate in any ODI of 15 balls or more.
The only England batsman to have a higher strike-rate in T20 internationals than Buttler is Phil Mustard, the Durham wicket keeper, and he only played twice.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013 Live Stream: Watch Live Stream of Pakistan Vs West Indies

Dear readers in the second match of the Champions Trophy 2013 Another Asian Giant Pakistan is facing West indies in The Oval cricket Ground. West Indies have fond memories of playing in the Champions Trophy, famously winning the tournament in 2004 at The Oval, the venue where they will be beginning their campaign on Friday. Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Ramnaresh Sarwan played that game almost nine years ago and are part of a side that can go all the way in this competition. West Indies seemed to gel well under the leadership of Darren Sammy, who led them to the World Twenty20 title, but poor returns in the ODI format meant Bravo was appointed his replacement as captain in 50-over cricket. This Champions Trophy will be his first major assignment, starting against opponents who have consistently been strong contenders in ICC tournaments.

Pakistan Vs West Indies Live Stream

Even though Pakistan are missing players who've been key members of their side in the past, and just barely managed to beat Ireland ahead of the Champions Trophy warm-ups, they've grown accustomed to the conditions and have a strong bowling attack to defend competitive scores. Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan have been dropped; Umar Gul is out due to injury; Mohammad Hafeez has been solid at the top of the order; there's the experience of Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq in the middle, and Wahab Riaz and Junaid Khan have been impressive as seamers.
A defeat is a significant setback in a short competition such as this, so expect both sides to be high on intensity, also in part because of the support they are likely to receive at the ground. West Indies, in their pomp, were best supported at The Oval when they played in England, and Pakistan are never short of followers wherever they go.

Team news
West Indies could have some tough choices to make. They have plenty of depth in their batting, and it'll be interesting to see if they pick Sammy in the playing XI. They opened with Sarwan in the ODI series against Zimbabwe in February, but Johnson Charles is fresh from two straight half-centuries in the warm-ups. Would they prefer going in with an extra specialist batsman?
West Indies (possible): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 6 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Kemar Roach/Tino Best.
Pakistan played just one warm-up game (their first was washed out) and gave Umar Amin a go in the middle order, but it remains to be seen if he's picked tomorrow.
Pakistan (possible): 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Asad Shafiq, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Saeed Ajmal, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Asad Ali/Ehsan Adil.
Pitch and conditions
On a sunny day, The Oval track could cater to a high-scoring game, and take a bit of turn. The conditions may not support much swing. There hasn't been an ODI played at The Oval in almost 10 months; scores of 238 and 252 were chased down comfortably by West Indies and England there last year.
Stats
• In ICC ODI tournaments, Pakistan have beaten West Indies on four occasions and lost eight times. They won the last two encounters between the teams in ICC tournaments - in the 2009 Champions Trophy in South Africa and the World Cup quarter-final in Dhaka.
• Chris Gayle has scored 840 runs against Pakistan in ODIs, at 31.11. Sarwan has a good record against Pakistan in the format, scoring 514 runs in 14 games at 46.72.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013: Watch Live streaming of India Vs South Africa

Dear readers Champions Trophy 2013 is to begin with the big Match between the South Africa and India. The last time India played South Africa in an ODI was in the 2011 World Cup, when India's top five were Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh. The bowling line-up consisted of Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel and Harbhajan Singh. None of those players, most of whom are vastly experienced, are in the squad for this tournament.
South Africa are also missing some of their legendary names, with Graeme Smith injured and Jacques Kallis skipping the tournament for personal reasons. Their fans might have felt reassured looking at the familiar bowling line-up, but Dale Steyn's side strain means he could miss the first game. However both teams looks confident after the great warm up matches.

India Vs South Africa Champions Trophy 2013 Live
At least they can still rely on the calm guidance of Gary Kirsten, who has had a golden run in his two years as coach. He has already firmly established South Africa as the best Test side in the world, a position they flirted with for a couple of decades without really nailing it down. The next challenge for Kirsten, who will step down as South Africa coach later this month, is to end his country's painfully long hunt for an ICC trophy to go along with their triumph in the inaugural version of this tournament way back in 1998.

While South Africa have at least been able to focus entirely on the cricket, India haven't. For the past few weeks in India, cricket has dominated newspaper front pages and has been breathlessly reported on round-the-clock by television channels, but almost all of it has been about the corruption in the IPL, and the ensuing turmoil in the BCCI. Even as MS Dhoni was addressing the press in Cardiff ahead of the opening match of the Champions Trophy, the cricket news back in India was about the Delhi Police questioning the owners of Rajasthan Royals in connection with the spot-fixing controversy.
Dhoni's already has a stellar CV as captain, but marshalling this new-look team under these distractions, especially in a short tournament like the Champions Trophy where even one defeat could mean elimination, will be among the biggest challenges of his career.

Team news
Dinesh Karthik seems to have forced his way into the XI after a couple of sparkling centuries in the warm-up matches, which leaves India with two places to decide. One of the openers' slots is likely to be a toss-up between Rohit Sharma, who had mixed success at the top of the order in the series against England earlier this year, and M Vijay, who has had a poor IPL and is yet to convince in ODIs. The allrounders' spot is a contest between Ravindra Jadeja and Irfan Pathan, and who gets the nod could depend on whether India are adventurous enough to opt for a four-man pace attack.
India: (probable) 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Dinesh Karthik, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja/ Irfan Pathan, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh Yadav
"Steyn does not look good at all. It's touch and go," AB de Villiers said the day before the opening game. In case Steyn is deemed unfit, it is likely that Rory Kleniveldt will take his place. The rest of the line-up looks fairly settled, with David Miller likely to miss out in the middle order.
South Africa: (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 AB de Villiers (capt & wk), 5 Faf du Plessis, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Rory Kleinveldt, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe
Pitch and conditions
Both top orders struggled in the India-Australia warm-up match on Tuesday in Cardiff, but Karthik and Dhoni showed there weren't too many devils in the track. Dhoni's verdict on the pitch was: "There was not much swing for them but there was variable pace on offer." Though Australia were rolled over for 65 by India, they had comfortably chased down 257 against West Indies on a similar surface on Saturday.
Stats
·         South Africa have the worst ODI record in England over the past six years, having won only two matches in 10
·         Of the players in the squads of the two teams, only AB de Villiers has aggregated 100 or more runs in the Champions Trophy
·         India have won both their encounters against South Africa in the Champions Trophy, the last of which was in 2002. Of those who played that 2002 fixture, only Robin Peterson is in the current tournament's squads.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013: Bravo to lead West Indies at Champions Trophy

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo has replaced Darren Sammy as West Indies' one-day international captain and will lead the team in next month's Champions Trophy in England.Sammy, who led the Caribbean team to the World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka last year, would continue to captain the test and T20 teams, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said in a statement on Sunday.

"Our results in tests and T20s have been showing consistent improvement and Sammy deserves every kudos for the work he has done in leading and moulding the team in these formats," Clyde Butts, the chairman of selection panel, said."We remain confident in his leadership in these formats and will recommend that he continues as the captain for test and T20 cricket."However, our ODI results have not been as strong and we believe that it is best that we freshen the leadership of the team in this format."

A medium-pace bowler and a hard-hitting batsman down the order, Bravo, led the side when Sammy was rested for the home one-dayers against Zimbabwe. The 29-year-old, a long-time vice-captain, said he was honoured to get the opportunity."To be named captain of the West Indies one-day team is one of the highest honours and I am truly humbled to have been appointed to this most prestigious position," Bravo said.

"The brand of cricket that I intend to bring is a never-say-die attitude and I am really looking forward to the opportunity."While Sammy kept his place in the 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy as an all-rounder, Kieran Powell was not considered due to a finger injury, the WICB said.

West Indies are in Group B of the June 6-23 tournament alongside India, Pakistan and South Africa.

Squad:
Dwayne Bravo (captain), Denesh Ramdin, Tino Best, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Smith.

Champions Trophy 2013: India drop Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh for Champions Trophy

Opener Gautam Gambhir and middle order batsman Yuvraj Singh were axed while stumper Dinesh Karthik was rewarded for his good batting form with a berth in India's 15-member squad for next month's Champions Trophy in England.
Apart from Karthik, all-rounder Irfan Pathan, pacers Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar also made a comeback to the side announced BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale after a meeting of the selection committee on Saturday. The selection committee, headed by former cricketer Sandeep Patil, however, surprisingly picked Murali Vijay in the team ahead of the left-handed Gambhir. Vijay has not been in the best of form and has been dropped from even his IPL franchise, the Chennai Super Kings.
Pacer Ashok Dinda, who has been getting a lot of stick in the IPL, and batsman Ajinkya Rahane were also left out of the squad, which has Mahendra Singh Dhoni as captain for the event starting June 6.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra, performing well in the IPL, was also included in the team to complement Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin -- the two other specialist tweakers in the side.

Shikhar Dhawan, who made his Test debut with a breathtaking 187 against Australia recently, expectedly got the selectors' nod as the number one opener.

The national selectors sprung a surprise by sacking Gambhir, whose form has been patchy of late. He has scored 320 runs in 11 games in the ongoing IPL, including three half-centuries.

Gambhir has, however, been named in the probables' list for the tri-series in the West Indies, which will follow the Champions Trophy. In that list, six players -- Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Ambati Rayudu, Rahul Sharma and Gambhir -- were added to the 15 named for the Champions Trophy.
Gautam Gambhi & Yuv raj Singh
Gambhir's omission did come as a surprise, particularly after his long-time partner Virender Sehwag was not even included in the 30-member probables list.

Clearly, the selectors are looking to blood in young openers keeping in view the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Yuvraj's ouster was not entirely unexpected considering that the left-hander has not been in the best of form in the ongoing IPL.

Yuvraj has been without a half-century in his eight IPL matches for Pune Warriors, managing just 156 runs at an average of 22.28 with the best being a 34.

Considering the seam-friendly conditions in England, the selectors have opted for five pace bowlers with Ishant Sharma spearheading the attack.

The squad has five specialist batsmen in Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Vijay and Dhawan, while Dhoni and Karthik are the two wicketkeeper-batsmen.

In Gambhir's absence, Dhawan and Vijay are likely to be the opening combination though Karthik could also be an option since there are just two specialist openers in the squad.

India and South Africa are scheduled to kick off the contest on June 6 at the Sophia Gardens at Cardiff, Wales in a Group B match.

India will then take on the West Indies at the Kennington Oval in London on June 11 before concluding the four-team group engagement on June 15 against archrivals Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka form Group A.

The top two teams from each group would progress to the semi-finals scheduled on June 19 and 20 at the Kennington Oval and Sophia Gardens respectively with the winners advancing to the June 23 final to be played at Edgbaston.

This would be the first international engagement for the Indian team after the conclusion of the four-Test series against Australia on March 24.

Indian Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Murali Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Irfan Patan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Vinay Kumar.

ICC Champions Trophy 2013:Afridi, Umar dropped from Pakistan squad

Flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi and batsman Umar Akmal were the prominent names to be axed from the 15-member Pakistan cricket squad announced for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy in England.Chief selector Iqbal Qasim announced the squad yesterday in Lahore after lengthy deliberations although the selectors had finalised it last week and submitted it to the board Chairman for approval. At the end of the day, it transpired that the selectors made two changes to their submitted squad replacing injured middle-order batsman Haris Sohail with Umar Amin and preferring to pick left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz over Aizaz Cheema.

The rest of the squad remained the same and Qasim said that Afridi was dropped because of his recent poor bowling form."Afridi's bowling has not been up to the mark in recent matches. He has not taken wickets and his primary role in the team is that of a bowler," Qasim told a press conference.
The same sets of players with the addition of a few more are expected to get the central contracts for the year 2013.The Pakistan Cricket Board also announced that Australian Trent Woodhill would be the batting coach of the team for the Champions Trophy and would join them in England.Woodhill is presently on the coaching staff of the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
Yesterday, the two major exclusions remained Afridi and Umar, who went to South Africa for the recent one-day series, and the inclusion of uncapped pacer Asad Ali.Asad has toured with Pakistan on recent tours to India and South Africa without getting a chance to play any match. The source said selectors relied on experience after consulting the captain and coach.
Qasim said Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Asad Ali, Ehsan Adil and Wahab are the five pacers selected in the squad while the spin department will be handled by Abdul Rehman and Saeed Ajmal.
"The selectors have also given a final warning to senior pros Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal to gear up and perform or consider the Champions Trophy their last tour with the national team," he said. Interestingly Afridi was also given a similar warning when the squad was announced for the one-day series in South Africa but he went wicketless.
Pakistan will play one-day series in Scotland and Ireland in May before going to England for the Champions Trophy. This will be their first visit to England since the 2010 spot-fixing scandal and they are placed with South Africa, India and West Indies in their group.
Pakistan squad: Nasir Jamshed, Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Misbah-ul-Haq (Capt), Shoaib Malik, Umar Amin, Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Asad Ali, Ehsan Adil and Wahab Riaz.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra has also been included while left-arm spinner Ojha has been left out of the list as he is seen more as a Test bowler.
