India Played 1-1 Stalemate against Philippines in International Friendly

India drew 1-1 with Philippines in an international friendly held at the Kanchanjangha Stadium in Siliguri on Friday evening. A Sunil Chhetri goal in the 41st minute was cancelled out by Philip Younghusband in the very next minute as the two sides were made to settle for a draw.

India coach Wim Koevermans made as many as six changes to the side that started in the SAFF (South Asian Football Federation) Championship final as Aibor Khongjee was handed a debut.

The Dutchman dropped the likes of Subrata Paul, Nirmal Chettri, Syed Rahim Nabi and Gouramangi Moirangthem from the IMG-Reliance contracted players, besides injured Arata Izumi and Jeje Lalpekhlua who was named on the bench.Hans Michael Weiß started with Philip Younghusband and Jeffrey Mallen Christiaens in attack with Stephan Schrock back in the side after missing the friendly against United Arab Emirates which they lost 4-0.

The home side dominated proceedings early on as Sunil Chhetri tested the Filipino goalkeeper Roland Muller first in the 11th minute and again in the 28th minute when the Indian skipper saw his shot saved and the rebound sent wide by Francis Fernandes.Philippines had a few chances of their own but Philip Younghusband was stopped in his tracks by a vital tackle put in by Khongjee at the half-hour mark.

Minutes later, Partick Reichelt's header was kept out by India goalkeeper Karanjit Singh while Schrock was marked well by the Indian defense.India took the lead in the 41st minute when a Mehtab Hossain corner from the left was met by a powerful header from Chhetri which found the back of the net.

However, the visitors equalised in the very next minute as a stinging shot from Philip Younghusband on the edge of the box flew past the Indian custodian.Philippines looked to take the upper hand in the second half, but Koevermans' men remained composed at the back.

In the 70th minute, Schrock played a one-two with Phil Younghusband while the latter's shot on the turn was easily collected by Karanjit Singh.Weiß's side could have pulled off a winner a minute before regulation time when P Younghusband's shot bounced back from Karanjit's hands, while Reichelt's attempt off the rebound drifted wide.

The Indian custodian had to remain alert to the repeated encrochments made by the away team, but had a well-organised defense that absorbed the pressure.

India also had a last minute opportunity to bag the winner in injury time, but substitute Jeje Lalpekhlua wasn't able to guide his shot on target after the chance was created by Clifford Miranda.

Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao to fight in Sept!!

Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao plans to fight again in September, with the bout likely to be staged outside the United States to avoid high taxes, his spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Negotiations are ongoing for a rematch with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, who knocked Pacquiao out in his last fight in December, although the opponent and the venue are yet to be finalised, Rose Tamayo told AFP. "The fight is definitely in September. We will talk about the opponent and the place after the May 13 elections," Tamayo said, citing comments Pacquiao made to her on Wednesday.
Pacquiao, 34, is running for re-election as a congressman in next month's Philippine mid-term elections, and he is currently on the campaign trail. Tamayo said Pacquiao wanted his next fight to be outside the United States, where he has traditionally fought in front of huge crowds and for enormous pay-per-view television revenues, to avoid high taxes.
Manny Pacquiao
"Manny wants to fight outside the United States because of the taxes... Singapore is one of the top places for consideration. There is also Macau and Dubai," Tamayo told AFP. Pacquiao has won an unprecedented eight world titles in different weight divisions, and was until recently regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound boxer.
But Pacquiao lost his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown in June last year in a controversial points decision to US fighter Timothy Bradley, then suffered his shock knockout defeat to Marquez. His losses prompted calls for him to retire, but Pacquiao has consistently signalled his intention to keep on fighting. Pacquiao's sporting achievements lifted him and his family out of deep poverty, as he became one of the highest paid sportsmen in the world and an endorser of a myriad of products in the Philippines. He translated his boxing success into the political ring, winning a seat in the nation's lower house of parliament in 2010.
Pacquiao is running for re-election unopposed in the May polls, while seeking to build a power base for his family. Pacquiao's wife and brother are also running for political posts in the May elections.
Many Philippine politicians draft in relatives to stand for other elective positions to spread their influence and strengthen their power networks.

North Korea Clinched the Title of AFC Challenge Cup 2012!!

Penalties came back to haunt Turkmenistan for the second successive AFC Challenge Cup with Jang Song-hyok scoring from the spot two minutes after Berdy Shamuradov had missed a penalty to give DPR Korea a 2-1 win over Turkmenistan in the 2012 final.
The match started well enough for Turkmenistan, who lost the North Koreans as the 2010 final was settled by a penalty shootout as skipper Shamuradov opened the scoring with barely 120 seconds of an intriguing encounter at the Dashrath Stadium played. Jong Il-gwan headed the defending champions level in the 35th minute and they dominated the match until the 83rd minute when Shamuradov had a chance to seal it for the Turkmen. But nerves got the better of him and just two minutes later Jang Song-hyok, who had given away the penalty, netted the winner for the North Koreans.
DPR Korea Winner of AFC Challenge Cup 2012

In addition to winning the AFC Challenge Cup for the second time, DPR Korea also became the first team other than hosts Australia, 2011 champions and Korea Republic, to book their place at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Just two minutes after Turkmenistan had kicked-off they took the lead when Shamuradov burst through on goal and smashed an unstoppable drive past DPR Korea keeper Ri Myong-suk to give his country the lead over the North Koreans for the second successive AFC Challenge Cup final following his 32nd minute opener in the 2010 showdown.
DPR Korea came close to equalising in the 10th minute but before Pak Kwang-ryong could pull the trigger Turkmenistan defender Akmyrat Jumanazarov slid in with a perfectly-timed tackle to deny the FC Basel striker. For all the defending champions' slick interplay they found it difficult to find their way through a well-organised Turkmenistan backline until the 35th minute when Pak Nam-chol's cross from the right met an unmarked Jong Il-gwan, whose header bulleted past Turkmen keeper Rahmanberdi Alyhanov and into the back of the net. Pak Kwang-ryong's intelligent ball set Pak Nam-chol through on goal but the midfielder's delicate chip went just over the crossbar with four minutes of the first-half left to play. DPR's dominance continued in the second half with 2010 AFC Young Player of the Year Jong Il-gwan coming close to his second two minutes after the restart, firing a low shot just wide after he was set up be a subtle Jang Kuk-chol back-flick.

Arslanmyrat Ammanov, a surprising omission from the starting 11 given his impressive form in the tournament thus far, rattled the crossbar with a powerful 67th minute free-kick before Jumanazarov narrowly missed connecting with another dangerous set-piece from the reigning Turkmenistan Player of the Year a minute later. Amanov was again involved when Turkmenistan were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when the talented 21-year-old was tripped in the box by substitute Jang Song-hyok but Shamuradov nervously fired the 83rd minute spot-kick high over the bar. Unbelievably, DPR Korea were awarded a penalty of their own two minutes later as David Sakisov was adjudged to have hauled down Pak Kwang-ryong in the area. And Jang Song-hyok more than made up for his earlier transgression by keeping his nerve to score the penalty that gave DPR Korea the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup title and a place in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

AFC Challenge cup 2012:DPR Korea 2-0 Philippines

Defending Champions DPR Korea made a solid start to their 2012 AFC Challenge Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 defeat of the Philippines in Friday's Group B opener at the Halchowk Stadium.
DPR Korea dominated the first-half but were denied a 16th minute lead when Azkal's keeper Neil Etheridge saved a retaken Pak Song-chol penalty.
The midfielder had thought he had netted his ninth AFC Challenge Cup goal to equal the tournament record set by Palestine's Fahed Attal but Indian referee Pratap Singh ruled out the goal citing encroachment inside the box.

Etheridge, who only arrived in Nepal on Wednesday, was in inspired form denying the 2012 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on ne fewer than five occasions as the Philippines went into the break on level terms with the AFC Challenge Cup favourites.
The North Koreans finally broke through the resilient Philippines defence courtesy of Pak Nam-chol's 58th minute header before Etheridge - an understudy to Australia international Mark Schwarzer at English Premier League club Fulham - failed to deal with a high cross from the right, allowing substitute Jang Kuk-chol to double the defending champions' lead 11 minutes later.
DPR Korea sought to add to their tally and laid siege on the Philippines goal but a combination of some staunch defending and fine keeping from Etheridge kept the scoreline respectable.

DPR Korea kick-off their Challenge Cup 2012 campaign against Philippines in a Group B encounter on March 9th.
The Chollima, who even qualified for the 2010 World Cup, remain one of the enigmas of world football, shrouded in secrecy.
They come into the tournament after having wrapped up their World Cup qualification campaign, knocked out, having finished third in their group behind Uzbekistan and Japan. They did however, beat Japan 1-0 at home in November 2011 and drew their last two games before their trip to Nepal, drawing 1-1 with Kuwait in a friendly and following that up with a 1-1 draw against Tajikistan in a World Cup qualifier.

So Yun Jong Su’s men enter the tournament in decent form, and look like a side which should progress through to the knockout stages. Their strength as always, will be a very composed and solid defense with the reliable Ri-Myong Guk in goal behind them, while they shall look to hit the opposition on the counter and press them into making mistakes with their strong work ethic.
Philippines make a re-entry into the tournament after having not qualified for the last two editions and they would be looking to surprise quite a few observers by marking their participation with an upset victory over the highly fancied defending champions.
The game has been on a upwards swing in the country, with them recording their first World Cup qualifier win against Sri Lanka in June last year before dispatching off Nepal 4-0 in a friendly in November. In their last international match before the Challenge Cup, the Azkals were a whisker away from a win against Malaysia before conceding in the very last minute. The team’s fortunes have improved since it took to playing a more direct, counter-attacking style of football.
Michael Weiss’ squad has a few players who ply their trade abroad, with goalkeeper Niel Etheridge and defender Dennis Cagara of Fulham and FSV Frankfurt respectively being two of the more high profile players in their team.

The duo can expect a tough game against North Korea and will definitely have to be at their best if the Azkals are to have a hope of beating the Chollima. Another problem for Philippines will be the altitude, which they are not particularly used to and that could affect their performances, as the coach pointed out in a recent interview.

Facts About Opponents:
  • Philippines is the only team amongst the eight nations in the competition who had to play a pre-qualifier.
  • Paulino Alcantara, from Philippines was the first Asian player to play in Europe – and for no lesser a club than Barcelona!
  • DPR Korea might have played in the 2010 World Cup, but that didn’t really help them get star status back home. They were made to work in a construction site right after the World Cup as punishment for their performances in South Africa.
  • While Philippines have never qualified for a major football tournament, they were one of the 12 Asian associations that actually founded the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

AFC Challenge cup 2012: Philippines FA Apologizes to Lady Match Commissioner; Charged Players Not to Be Suspended or Imposed Penalty before AFC Challenge Cup

Philippines FA and National team manager, Dan Palami had issued a public apology on behalf of the Azkals while the PFF ethics committee headed by lawyer Eric Ingles is making a parallel investigation to determine sanctions for sexual harrassment case. Cristy Ramos, who served as match commissioner of the international football friendly pitting the Philippines and Malaysia on Wednesday, has filed a sexual harassment complaint before the Asian Football Confederation against the players.

Ramos, the daughter of former President Fidel V. Ramos who served as president of the Philippine Olympic Committee from 1997 to 1999, said she felt disrespected when she conducted the prematch inspection inside the Azkals’ dugout at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Palami said that the incident could be traced to pure misunderstanding. He reasoned out that Guirado was doing his usual pre-game exercise routine and Moy was discussing something when Ramos entered the dugout. In her complaint to AFC disciplinary committee chairman Lim Kia Tong, Ramos complained about the behavior of Moy and Angel Guirado and the Philippine team during the routine pre-match team check. Team manager Dan Palami and coach Michael Weiss were not present.

No suspension on the players before AFC Challenge Cup:

Though Ramos filed a complaint with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), match commissioner Christy Ramos said she doesn’t expect it will lead to any suspension or penalty before next week’s Challenge Cup in Nepal.

“Of course they have to evaluate the merits of my complaint. They will have to investigate both sides. Investigation will take time,” Ramos told Sun.Star Cebu.

The Philippine team is now in Nepal and is busy acclimatizing for their Challenge Cup matches against defending champions North Korea, and former champions India and Tajikistan

AFC Challenge Cup 2012: Know the Participating Team – Philippines

Despite being one of the oldest national teams in Asia, the Philippines are yet to qualify for the Asian Cup or the World Cup. However, they enjoyed some success in its early years between 1913 and 1934 in the Far Eastern Championship Games.

In September 2006 the country fell to 195th on the FIFA World Rankings, its lowest ever. By the end of the year, the Philippines moved back up to 171st overall, after a good run in the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship qualification. They were able to win three games in a row which was a first for the Philippines and thus qualifying for the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship.

Since 2007, the Philippines have failed to qualify for a major competition. They came close in 2008 after missing out on the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup only on goal difference, and the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup with an inferior goals scored record. In 2010, they qualified for the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, where they stayed undefeated in the group stage and also went on to beat defending champions Vietnam, becoming one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament. The team reached the knockout stage for the first time, eventually losing to Indonesia in the semifinals. In 2011, the Philippines qualified for the AFC Challenge Cup for the first time since qualifiers were introduced in the tournament.

The traditional home kit is similar to the France national team; blue jersey, white shorts, and red socks. However, in recent times, the home and away kit has either been all-blue, all-red or all-white. Currently the home kit is all-blue, while the away kit is all-white.
On July 3, 2011, the Philippines recorded their first ever victory in FIFA World Cup qualification, beating Sri Lanka 4–0 in the second leg of the first preliminary round. They advanced 5–1 on aggregate, drawing 1–1 in the first leg before winning at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

International Friendly Match: Malaysia 1- 1 Phillipines Live stream

The Malaysian Tigers has arrived in the Philippines three days ago for the scheduled international friendly match tomorrow February 29, 2012. The National Team of Malaysia is one of the toughest rival that will be face by the Philippine Azkals.
The Malaysian National Football Team is the current ASEAN Champion, having captured their first ever international title last December 2010, the AFF Suzuki Cup Championship.
The National Football Team of Malasia is also known as the Malayan Tiger or in Malaysian language they were commonly called as Harimau Malaysia. The team will come to the Philippines and will go up face to face with the Azkals.

The Harimau vs. Azkals game is highly anticipated not only by the Filipinos but the Malaysian fans as well. The Malaysians promised to avenged their lost during their last visit to the Philippines last November 2001 when they were beaten by the Philippine National Football Team in the semi-finals of the SEA Games.
The Philippines and Malaysian Football had an earlier legacy of rivalry. In the late 1960′s Malaysia scored their biggest win against an international team and it was the Philippines whom they beat with the final score at 15-1 in favor of Malaysia.
Meanwhile here’s the official line-up of both teams.
