World Cricket League: Singapore crowned Division Five champions

Hosts Singapore lifted the World Cricket League Division Five trophy, beating neighbours Malaysia by nine wickets in a one-sided final at the Kallang Ground. Both teams have been promoted to Division Four, and will join Nepal, Tanzania, Denmark and the United States of America in the division to be played late this year.
Malaysia's 159 turned out to be woefully inadequate as Singapore, led by Chaminda Ruwan's unbeaten 91, guided them home in just 26.4 overs. Ruwan smashed 14 fours and a six and shared an unbeaten stand of 118 with Anish Param for the second wicket.

Malaysia's middle order let the side down after the captain Suresh Navaratnam opted to bat. The opener R Madhavan scored 48 to get the team off to a steady start, but Singapore fought back thanks to their legspinner Christopher Janik, who took 3 for 17. Hassan Ghulam resisted with 33 at No.10 but it came a little too late. Malaysia lost their last nine wickets for only 85 runs.
Singapore coach Trevor Chappell said: "I am very pleased to have been able to have coached the side to promotion, they've worked hard this week and it's a good group of cricketers from many different backgrounds trying to play as much cricket as they can while also raising families, studying or working full-time.
Malaysia's coach Roy Dias said poor batting had let the side down in the event.
"There have been few players that have really performed this week with the bat for us and in my opinion we did well to win the first four matches with the performances we put in. I am disappointed we lost today but our batting and bowling wasn't up to the mark this week at all and I want to go back to Malaysia and look at the pool of players on offer and start to phase out some of the older members of the squad to help the team develop.
"I'm looking forward to Division 4 and facing my former team Nepal, the whole division is going to be tough for Malaysia but I believe we have got what it takes to be there."
3rd Place Play-off
It was a tense finish at the 3rd place play-offs at the Padang as Guernsey sneaked home by one run againstCayman Islands. Jeremy Frith top scored for Guernsey with 57, off 81 balls before he was trapped lbw to Troy Taylor, the right-arm seamer. Taylor took 4 for 50 and he was supported by Ryan Bovell, who took 3 for 41. Cayman Islands though conceded a massive 49 extras, including 32 wides and six no-balls, amounting to just over six extra overs.
Guernsey bowled with better discipline and were led by a five-wicket haul by the right-arm seamer David Hooper. Pearson Best was the only batsman to show solid resistance, scoring 79. Conroy Wrght made a patient 39, off 77 balls, but Hooper took two more lower order wickets to help Guernsey sneak home.
5th Place Play-off
Bahrain coasted to a five-wicket win against Argentina in the fifth place play-offs at the Indian Association Ground. Bahrain's off-spin duo of Adil Hanif and Zafar Zaheer took four wickets each to restrict Argentina to a paltry 139. Argentina featured some of the reserves who had not played in the tournament this week, and the batsmen struggled. Martin Siri's 26 was the highest individual score in the innings. Hanif followed up his efforts with the ball to hit 38 to set up Bahrain's easy win. He picked up the Player of the Tournament trophy as well, in addition to his Man-of-the-Match award.

ICC World Cricket League Division Five: Singapore, Malaysia promoted to Division Four

Malaysia slipped to a two-wicket defeat at the hands of Bahrain at the Indian Association Ground in Singapore but they managed to gain a promotion to Division Four of the World Cricket League after winning their first four matches in the round-robin stage. Bahrain, despite the win, were relegated to Division Six. They finished with the same number of points as Cayman Islands, but with a lower net run-rate.
Malaysia, who chose to bat, were bowled out for 195, collapsing from 129 for 2. Suhan Alagaratnam and Anwar Arudin, who hit half-centuries, took Malaysia to a strong position at one stage but the medium-pace of Rizwan Baig - he picked up four wickets - restricted them.
Adil Hanif led the way for Bahrain in the chase, making 65 off 80 balls, including two sixes and received support from the middle order. Ashraf Yaqoob, Baig and Tahir Dar chipped in with useful contributions and helped Bahrain seal victory in 41 overs after losing eight wickets.
"We are disappointed, today we played the cricket we should have played all week and we knew we could win this match," Bahrain captain Yaser Sadeq said. "We had hoped for promotion to help us to improve even further as a side and help us to push the youth through this team since it's now in need of some fresh faces
.
"We'll go back to Bahrain, regroup and hopefully we can improve and come back stronger next time we compete and regain promotion."
Malaysia will play Singapore in the final on Saturday for the title. "We've won promotion out of this division which is what we ultimately wanted to do. We're excited to be facing up to sides like Nepal, Tanzania, Denmark and USA - some of whom we haven't played at all or in quite some time," Suresh Navaratnam, the Malaysia captain, said.
"Tomorrow's game is going to be a big one no matter what for us - we may play Singapore five or six times a year, but we want to come out the winners of this event and walk away with the trophy." Guernsey beat Cayman Islands by six wickets at the Kallang Ground, and both teams kept their place in the division. The round-robin stage ended in disappointment for Argentina and elation for hosts Singapore at The Padang. Argentina lost their fifth game in a row and Singapore won their fourth game, taking the top spot in the points table and securing their promotion to Division Four. They'll play Malaysia in the Division Five final on Saturday.

USA will not host 2012 ICC World Cricket League Division Four. Nepal may get Chance to Host Div 4

In a major blow to USA’s viability as a suitable host for top flight cricket, the ICC confirmed on Thursday that the country is no longer being considered to host this year’s ICC World Cricket League Division Four tournament. The event is scheduled to include Denmark, Nepal, Tanzania, USA and the top two sides from 2012 ICC WCL Division Five, which begins Saturday in Singapore. The sides gunning for promotion from that event are Argentina, Bahrain, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Malaysia and the host nation.

According to an email from an ICC spokesperson, “The United States was one of the venues being evaluated for hosting the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 4 but, as with any ICC event, it was dependent on the potential hosting nations being able to meet a series of ICC criteria. Following discussions with USACA it was decided that the United States currently cannot meet those criteria and therefore will not be considered as a host for the event.”
When asked what criteria USACA failed to meet, the ICC spokesperson responded that a host country “is required to give a number of cricketing, operational and administrative assurances” but the spokesperson would not comment on which aspects USACA could not follow through. It is believed that USACA’s current administrative and governance issues, specifically the failure to hold constitutionally mandated elections in 2011, may have played a role in the ICC looking elsewhere for a host site for Division Four. According to the 2012 USACA calendar of events released on December 9, USA and Nepal were being considered by the ICC to host the event.
During a meeting with ICC President Sharad Pawar in New York last summer, former USACA Secretary John Aaron had campaigned for USA to host 2012 ICC WCL Division Four. This past autumn, USACA General Manager Manaf Mohamed sounded confident that USA would be selected to host the event and he expected the ICC to make a decision by November to confirm USA as the host, but no confirmation was ever made public by either USACA or the ICC.
The fact that USA has been passed over to host the tournament, after seemingly being in the driver’s seat for the opportunity, speaks volumes of how poor USACA’s current relationship is with the ICC. The relationship certainly did not improve this past autumn when USACA failed to meet several administrative deadlines laid out by the ICC in conjunction with the 2011 ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh. It resulted in a sternly worded letter from ICC Americas Regional Development Manager Martin Vieira to admonish USACA for failing to properly communicate with the ICC and for its handling of a standoff between the USACA board and women’s players over proposed tour stipends.
One of the major components to hosting a higher level WCL event is having at least three turf facilities within close proximity to each other. There are three turf facilities in the Fort Lauderdale area – Central Broward Regional Park, Brian Piccolo Park and Boca Raton CC – as well as three separate turf pitches at Woodley Park in Los Angeles so the USA would not have failed from that standpoint. There is also adequate infrastructure off the field in order to host teams, such as hotels within close proximity to the grounds, as well as suitable internet network capabilities at the grounds to meet media requirements. As recently as July, USA hosted the ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament in Florida while USA also hosted the ICC Americas U-19 Division One tournament last February.
If Nepal now has the inside track to host the event, it will be much more difficult for USA to gain promotion back to Division Three. In the current WCL cycle which began in 2009, eight out of 10 host countries have finished first or second in tournament play. The only two who didn’t were the Netherlands at Division One in 2010, a tournament in which there was no promotion or relegation at stake, and Botswana at Division Seven in 2011.
While USA gained promotion from the Division Five tournament staged in Nepal in 2010, finishing in the top two again in Kathmandu won’t be easy. In addition to a young and energetic Nepal side, USA will also have to contend with a Denmark team that took two out of two matches against USA at Division Three in Hong Kong last year. Depending on the results of Division Five next week, there is a strong chance USA may have to go up against a very solid Singapore team as well. Singapore beat USA convincingly by 99 runs in Nepal two years ago and would have advanced to Division Four in Italy with USA were it not for the unfortunate crowd trouble on the final day of group play in Kathmandu.
Nepal’s crowds, while enthusiastic, have a track record of volatile behavior. Crowd violence marred USA’s win against the hosts in Kathmandu at Division Five in February of 2010 and there was a report of more crowd trouble at the same venue for last December’s ACC Twenty20 Cup match between the UAE and Nepal. Despite this, they may get a chance to host a World Cricket League tournament for the second time in just over two years. Tanzania hosted WCL Division Four in 2008 while other potential participants for the next Division Four – Guernsey, Argentina, Singapore, Malaysia – have also hosted WCL tournaments in the past. Meanwhile, the USA has yet to host one.
Former USACA CEO Don Lockerbie stated during an interview while traveling with the USA team in Nepal in February of 2010 that he hoped USA would get a chance to host a major ICC event in the near future, such as the Champions Trophy in 2013 – which was eventually awarded to England and Wales – in order to build a bigger profile for the USA on the global cricket stage. However, if USA is being passed over to host a World Cricket League tournament, thoughts of hosting a Champions Trophy or World Cup are a pipe dream and it must also cast doubt on plans between New Zealand Cricket and USACA to start up an IPL-style Twenty20 league this summer.

ICC rebrands 50-Over League All the teams have Chance to qualify for Cricket worldcup 2015

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced that the current 50-Over League played by the top eight Associate and Affiliate Members (AMs) will now be called the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCL Championship).
The WCL Championship, together with the ongoing global divisions of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League (WCL), provides a dual pathway for all AMs to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2015.

The competing teams in the WCL Championship include Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands and Scotland - all with ODI status - along with the top two sides from WCL Division 2 in 2011, Namibia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The event is being played over a two and a half year period, and commenced in 2011. It will conclude towards the end of 2013 after each team has played each other in two matches across seven home or away rounds. Each team will therefore play 14 matches in total.

The top two teams in the WCL Championship will automatically join the ICC's 10 Full Members in the CWC 2015, which is being jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

"The WCL Championship provides exciting ongoing competition for the top eight AMs through to the end of 2013, with all matches having an impact on ICC Cricket World Cup qualification," said ICC Global Development Manager Tim Anderson.

The bottom six teams in the WCL Championship will receive a second qualifying opportunity when they participate in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier (CWCQ) in early 2014. This 10-team event will determine the final two qualifiers into the CWC 2015.
Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong, who finished third and fourth in WCL Division 2 in 2011, will also take part in the CWCQ 2014, while the other two competing teams will be decided via the ongoing WCL divisional structure.

WCL Division 5 will be hosted in Singapore from February 18 to 25, followed by Division 4 later in 2012, then Division 3 in 2013. The top two teams in Division 3 will play in the CWCQ 2014.

"By both the WCL Championship and divisional events forming part of this qualifying process, not only do the top AMs have the opportunity to play against each other more regularly in matches with significant context, but all ICC Members have the opportunity to qualify for cricket's flagship global event," added Mr Anderson.

Round three of the WCL Championship begins on 18 February 2012, with Ireland taking on Kenya in Mombasa. WCL Division 5 commences in Singapore on the same day, and will be contested by Argentina, Bahrain, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Malaysia and Singapore. The top two teams will then be promoted to Division 4.
